I absolutely loved reading 'The Dream Home' and I couldn't wait to read this one - 'The Curfew'.
Let's set the scene:
Andy and Laura expect their son Connor to be home by his curfew at midnight. Connor is allowed out to celebrate with his friends after finishing his exams. Andy assumes Connor has come home after seeing him in bed. However, Andy is mistaken and it turns out Connor has missed his curfew and it's off a series of events that changes five families lives forever.
Only five teenagers, including Connor, know the truth of what happened at the party in the woods that fateful night. But when only four out of the five teenagers make it out of the woods, Andy turns detective to prove his son's innocence and figure out what happened to Emily, the missing teenager. With no help from his brother Rob or nephew Zac, can Andy figure out what happened that fateful night?
What I liked about The Curfew
I like the trope of this book. It's a classic case of how far parents will go to protect their children. It's relatable for any parent reading this book as parents do set curfews for their teenage children. Parents do expect their children to tell the truth. The parents that sometimes struggle to drag information out of their children in the hope of helping them.
I loved how Andy and Laura were determined to stick up for their son and not give up on him even though he'd given up himself.
Also, I loved Andy and Laura's second and youngest child, Harriet (AKA Harry). A geek who loves Harry Potter and hacking and a very clever and on-the-ball 12-year-old!
What I disliked about 'The Curfew'
I didn't like how the police investigation was described. The main detective, DS Shah, was so adamant that Connor had done something wrong to Emily that she didn't want to explore any alternative possibilities. I felt she was harsh and judgemental and her questioning of Connor was, well, questionable.
I felt that the book dragged out about 50-100 pages longer than it should have. The book could have concluded a lot sooner and it felt a little dragged out near the end.
My favourite moment of the book
It has to be when Harriet speaks with DS Shah near the end of the book. I won't say too much more to avoid spoiling it!
Would I recommend 'The Curfew' by T.M. Logan?
It's a good thriller, but it wasn't the most 'thrilling' as it were. I liked the premise and the potential, but I think it dragged out a little longer than it should have.
Needless to say, it is a good read and I finished reading the book quite quickly (which usually happens when I read thrillers)
The adult characters are likeable (Andy and Laura), but the teenagers (excluding Harriet) are quite stubborn and belligerent, as some teenagers are I'd say!
Sounds like a good read! Thanks for sharing the review.

DeleteReally enjoyed your review! You captured the emotional depth of Andy and Laura's dedication so well. I’m definitely picking up the book now! As a parent, these kind of stories tend to hit a certain nerve nowadays ❤️
ReplyDeleteI think even since the release of 'Adolescence' on Netflix, everyone has been hit by the dangers of social media for youngsters. This book really does highlight that x
DeleteI haven't read anything by this author before, but looks like I need to change that, haha! I love thrillers and this sounds like a good, quick read, which I love! I'll have to check out The Dream Home too!

T.M. Logan's thrillers are amazing aren't they, Claire?! x
DeleteThe Curfew sounds like a decent read even with it dragging a bit. I tend to stick with books that have a solid premise, which this one sounds like it does, even if they are a slower in places. This will probably be something I put on my reading list—great review!
ReplyDeleteYes this book does have a strong premise, but it did drag a little, which is a shame. Nevertheless, it's still a brilliant book and would recommend it to anyone!
DeleteI haven't read any books by T.M. Logan, but The Curfew does sound pretty good! It also does seem like a common plot device in some thrillers for police to only focus on one suspect without looking into any other alternatives..
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree, thrillers always seem to focus on one suspect and not look elsewhere!
DeleteSounds like a good read! Thanks for sharing the review.
ReplyDeleteI hope this review has insipred you to read it!
