What is kerb appeal?
Kerb appeal is how attractive your home and surroundings look from the street to passers-by or buyers.
Why is kerb appeal so important?
Your home having good kerb appeal allows people to make a good first impression of your home. It means you have an extra advantage in selling your house to potential buyers. Also, having a well-maintained exterior can increase your home value if and when you decide to sell. A well-kept exterior can have a positive impact on your neighbourhood's aesthetic.
It also gives you self-satisfaction knowing your home looks beautifully maintained on the outside. It'll allow buyers to believe that if you take care of your home's exterior, you also take good care of your home's interior. Your home must look inviting and enticing from the outside for buyers.
How can I improve my home's kerb appeal?
There are many simple yet effective ways to improve your home's exterior. You honestly don't have to spend an awful lot of money to make these improvements, it's knowing what needs improving and how you can improve that.

Here are the ways you can instantly improve your home's kerb appeal:
1) Do a little gardening
Gardening may not be everybody's cup of tea, but planting pretty flowers, mowing the front lawn (if you have one) and weeding can make a huge difference to how pretty your home looks from the outside! You could do a few of these tasks:
- Place potted flowers on your doorstep.
- Plant pretty flowers for that pop of colour (if you do have a grassed area at the front of your house).
- Add hanging baskets next to your front door.
- Sweep away any fallen leaves or twigs.
- Trim any shrubs or hedges so they look neat and tidy.
2) Keep pathways/driveways/doorstep clean
It's amazing what a bucket of soap and hot water can do. And also a jet washer. Pathways and driveways towards the house could always benefit from a good jet wash. Remember, it's not just about the paths and driveways, but areas with decking, patios or rendered surfaces gather dirt and moss, so it's a good idea to scrub them down also.
3) Smarten up your front door
The front door is one of the key focal points for any house. A smart front door can appeal to any potential buyer. Installing a new front door, giving it a lick of paint (check Pinterest for any inspo) or even adding a new front doormat can elevate your home's kerb appeal. Ensure that you polish metal letterboxes, house numbers and door knockers.
4) Clean your windows
Another key focal point of your home is windows. Having clean windows not only allows natural daylight to shine through your windows when you're inside, but it also makes the outside of your home look aesthetically pleasing. If you struggle to clean your windows, find a local window cleaner and get them cleaned every 1-2 months. Not forgetting to clean the sills and ledges beneath the windows because they do gather grime and moss.
5) Think about adding exterior lighting
Outdoor LED lighting can make a home's entrance look pretty, but also safe. You can buy solar-led lighting, which is more cost-effective. If you have a porch, add a porch light and make sure it's working, especially for the dark Winter nights.
6) Add a lick of paint to walls and fencing
I know most people would never think to repaint the outside of the house when selling. However, a lick of paint can truly make a difference to your home's exterior. Painting the fence and/or gate can add instant kerb appeal.
If you have bare brickwork, give it a jet wash to give it that fresh look.

7) Ensure the house number is visible
Delivery drivers will surely agree with me on this one - a visible house number or name can make a huge difference.
Those are some ideas to help boost your home's kerb appeal!
The majority of these ideas cost the bare minimum and are so easy to do if you're selling your home. If your home has good kerb appeal, it'll guarantee to please and appease any potential buyers. Good kerb appeal can add value to your home and improve the asking price. Your kerb appeal can make or break a viewing, so make sure your home's exterior looks up to scratch before putting it on the market!
