Seven Festive Activities For Adults To Do On Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is such a magical and exciting day for many. Whether you have children or not, Christmas is such a special day. The run-up to Christmas is complete and there's that element of excitement for everyone, whatever your age.

Christmas Eve activities

Every household has its traditions when it comes to Christmas Eve. Some open one present on Christmas Eve night, some go to midnight mass, some spend time with loved ones before the big day and some go out for food and drinks. Christmas Eve is special for most of us, but for some, not so much. It's important to remember those who are more unfortunate than us and keep them in our thoughts.

For those who are stuck on what to do on Christmas Eve, here are some festive activities for adults to do:

1) Drive around looking at Christmas lights

This is my favourite tradition for Christmas Eve (and even during the run-up to Christmas). I love looking at other people's Christmas lights, or I like being nosey - make of it what you will.

2) Go for a Christmas Eve walk

I remember doing this every Christmas Eve when I was a kid. Me and my Mam used to go for a Christmas Eve walk, usually in the evening. We used to end up at my Nan's house and see her and my Grandad. I don't know how I can describe it, but a Christmas Eve walk (as long as it's not raining) has such a special feeling about it. Making the most of the crisp air, admiring Christmas lights and the deep conversations made the Christmas Eve walks the best.

3) Watch Christmas films

A pretty obvious activity to do on this day, but watching Christmas films on the 24th of December has that certain special element about it.

4) Do some last-minute baking

Hopefully, by this point, you're done with the food preparations for Christmas Day. But in case you want to bake a little something extra, crack out the mixing bowl and get baking!

5) Play a drinking game

Cocktail or mocktail, there are plenty of Christmas-themed games to play as an adult. Whether it's Christmas-themed bingo or playing drinking games based on Christmas movies, it's something a little different to do! There are plenty of Christmas-themed drinking game ideas online, particularly on Pinterest.

6) Visit family and/or friends

It seems quite the traditional thing to do, but visiting family and/or friends on Christmas Eve seems a little more special at this time of year. Whether swapping presents or going out for food or a drink, that quality time with loved ones at Christmas is a little more special.

7) Play board games

I do love playing a board game at Christmas. Whether it's 5 Second Rule, card games or Trivial Pursuit (do people still play that these days?), board games are a great method for family bonding time at Christmas!

I'd love to know your plans for Christmas this year. Do you have any special traditions you like to do on the 24th of December?

Let me know if you do any of these activities at Christmas!

  2. These are so cute! We always go into York on Christmas eve and have a meal. It's usually quiet as the tourists aren't there.

  4. These are all such lovely festive ideas. There's a house near us which is decorated to the max! Although there's a really creepy looking elf that sits at one end of their garden, it's caught me by surprise a few times! Haha. They go all out for halloween too. This year my father in law surprised the kids by dressing up as santa this year for the first time, so I'm not sure if that's going to be a new Christmas eve tradition. They sussed him out straight away mind, haha.

    1. I love those houses that go full-out for Christmas and their decorations, I don't like the sound of the creepy elf though! That's so cute that your father in law dressed as Santa this year, hopefully he does make it a new Christmas Eve tradition, even if they did suss him out straight away! x

  5. We pretty much got all of these covered over Christmas :D The 1st point about driving around looking at Christmas lights is more like being nosey about what people's apartments look like/how they've furnished. Because it's so dark everybody has their lights on and I do appreciate it when there are no useless curtains blocking my view😂 Am a curious sod... x
