The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman - A Review

I love reading books written by comedians, they tend to be the funniest and most enjoyable reads of all. I've been meaning to read one book in particular for a while - The Thursday Murder Club, written by Richard Osman.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman book.

In this debut book from Richard Osman, the story is based around a group of four old-aged pensioners who are living in a peaceful retirement village called Coopers Chase. The pensioners make friends over walnut cake, coffee and a cold-blooded murder case - as you do. We see Elizabeth (a former nurse), Joyce (we assume as an ex-spy/intelligence), Ron (an ex-trade union boss) and Ibrahim (a retired psychiatrist) try to tackle the murder of Tony Curran, a friend/contact of Ian Ventham (who ends up being another murder victim halfway through the story).

The four pensioners/friends attempt to work with the police, particularly DCI Chris Hudson and PC Donna Fritas.

The book is split into chapters from the present day and Joyce's excerpts from her diary. The chapters are really short, which made me read this book even quicker than I normally would.

So, would I recommend The Thursday Murder Club?

Yes, I would!

What I loved about this book was the British sense of humour which was portrayed throughout the book. The puns, one-liners and quips were hilarious, some I could even relate to! Put it this way, when I need to go into a retirement home, Coopers Chase (if it was real) is one I would love to check into!

This book is full of adventure, humour and excitement. I found myself looking back through the book to pick up on any clues I had missed regarding the murders. The older characters I could kind of relate 1 or 2 of my grandparents to. Elderly people are as straight as a die and will say it like it is. That's where a lot of the humour came from in this book.

However, this book does tackle topics such as loneliness and suicide, which was quite sad during the book. It reminds us all of the attention we should pay older people in this day and age. They have a lot to offer, and this book reminds us of that.

The Thursday Murder Club is a funny, heartfelt and exciting read. British humour at its best - even if there are murders involved.
