Why I Made My First Designer Purchase

We have all longed for that bag, pair of shoes, top, coat, jeans, car, sofa, hoover, coffee machine or slow cooker which is deemed expensive. Well, according to our bank accounts anyway.

But when you read five star reviews of the product or if you deem it to be an item which you will use for years to come, you will scrimp and save until you can officially say that you can afford the item.

Well guys, I'm here to tell you...

I made my first designer purchase!

I bought this beautiful Marc Jacobs bag which was reduced in the sale from £425 to £260. Bargain. I have a little confession to make - this wasn't the first initial Marc Jacobs bag I first had my eye on. I had my eye on a smaller version of this bag but that went out of stock on the website I was planning to buy it from. When scouring through a different website, I spotted this one that I had bought and realised that it was a bigger option but it was cheaper than the smaller one. That made the bargain even sweeter.

I'm happy that I went for the bigger version of the bag I originally wanted because with everything going on with Covid right now, I knew a bigger bag would be more practical as I'm carrying more items around with me now eg hand sanitiser, latex gloves etc.

Before making the purchase, I read Victoria from InTheFrow 's post sharing tips on how to make your first designer purchase. I'm so glad that I did take the time to read Vic's post as it helped steer me towards the right decision and I felt I was making the right choice in terms of making my first designer buy.

I made a little pinky promise to myself that when I would buy something a little more expensive, I would always aim for quality. I would always aim for practicality. I would always aim for something which could be worn with most outfits. There is absolutely no point in buying a designer item which can only be worn with one outfit or can be used once or twice before being shoved at the back of the wardrobe.

Now, this designer buying business isn't something I'm going to make a habit in doing. I will not be encouraging you to do the same. I made this purchase way back in November when things in terms of money were ok and I had saved up or months for this bag. Financially, things aren't great for a lot of people right now and I would NEVER spur or pressure you into making that purchase. Don't get yourself into debt guys, it's seriously not worth it. Only make that bigger buy if you're financially comfortable to do so.

In terms of buying more designer buys, I will only be spending a little more on bags in the future, purely because bags are something I do not buy very often. In fact, I buy a new one once or twice a year at the most. I've never been one to have a gazillion handbags in the wardrobe, I just don't see the point.

This new Marc Jacobs bag is being kept in it's dust bag right now until I can go out properly again. There's no point in swapping bags when I'm just sat in the house doing naff all. I want to enjoy the purchase I've made.

Let me know what you think of the bag!

  3. I love this Marc Jacobs Bag! It is beautiful and I am so glad you got a great deal on it. I don't buy bags very often either so I don't mind spending a bit more on them, especially if like this one they are practical and big enough to hold all of my things.

  13. Gorgeous bag and good for you for treating yourself! I think it's so much better to save up for something that costs more as you know it's made out of top quality materials and will last longer rather than frequently buying cheaper items - it's more of an investment then xx

  14. I love that people like yourself work hard to save up and then treat yourself, because it is such a nice reward. However, I do not like spending my money unless I know I really want it etc. I am not personally interested in bags but I can see why people love them. Also I don't have any particular interest in anything majorly expensive right now :) x

Whilst designer clothes and accessories aren't my thing, I love splurging on high-end makeup and skincare sometimes. If you've done your research and have the money, I say go for it!x

    1. Yes definitely Sarah, I wouldn't want to buy a bag which couldn't be worn with so many outfits as it would be a waste of money to me. I do like buy good makeup and skincare once in a while, but I haven't so much lately in terms of makeup as I haven't been wearing it much! x

  19. You made such a smart decision to get something you could wear with most things, your criteria for spending money is so spot on. I don't buy bags that often either as I prefer classic styles that can go with lots of things. I got a Coach tote for my birthday last summer and I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a new bag before that. I hope you're enjoying your new purchase! x

  29. When I first graduated I had a bit of a spend up in that first year of getting a decent salary - I didn't go nuts - I got a Michael Kors bag (looked like the Celine one - I absolutely love that bag but 3k or whatever it costs? no thank you). I also got a Ralph Lauren Tote bag...guess what, that was now 5 or 6 years ago and I still use them. You can buy cheap things and then they break over a few months later - you would probably end up spending the same amount of money in the long run. I'm glad I got my spendy habits out of the way back then, my perspective has completely changed now - I still value quality, however, I have a much more minimalistic approach.
