As we step out into the cooler weather, it's time to take out our jumpers, cardigans and coats out of hibernation. When it comes to Autumn trends, the argyle pattern is the one that springs to mind. It's such a recognisable pattern, and it works throughout Autumn! One aspect of the argyle pattern I love is that it's utterly timeless. Whether it's a casual, dressy or office look, the argyle pattern is very versatile and a classic to have in your wardrobe. And the Autumn season is the ideal time to parade your argyle jumpers or cardigans!
Where does the argyle pattern originate from?
The pattern originally comes from the 17th-century tartan of the Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland.
A lot of the argyle pattern is particularly associated with golf. But nowadays, it's more widely associated in the fashion world as being THE pattern to wear in Autumn.
There are many ways to style an argyle jumper or cardigan during the Autumn season. So, if you're stuck for inspiration, this is the post for you!
Here are some tips on how to style an argyle jumper or cardigan:
1) With denim
The easiest yet classic option. Styling an argyle jumper with denim is ideal if you're looking for that casual, everyday look. For me, it has to be wide-leg jeans or even straight-leg jeans that would look great with an argyle-patterned jumper or cardigan.
A pair of loafers would look fantastic with the jeans, or a pair of boots or trainers, depending on what style of jeans you wear.
2) Wear a shirt underneath
For a jumper, wearing a shirt underneath can really make the jumper pop even more and add that chic, preppy look. You can pair this with your favourite jeans or wide-leg tailored trousers for that smart look.
For a cardigan, adding a shirt underneath can give it that more tailored, more polished office look.
It's amazing how something as simple as wearing a shirt underneath an argyle jumper or cardigan can really make a difference to the overall look of the whole outfit.
3) Style with leggings
Again, an easy yet casual look if you style this pattern with leggings, especially if your argyle piece is oversized. Styling your argyle piece with leggings, knee-high boots, or even trainers can make the outfit look casual, but equally chic.
4) With shorts/skirt/skort
In Autumn, it's time for not only argyle to reappear, but for tights to come out of hibernation too. For that smart, chic look, wearing your argyle jumper or cardigan with a pair of tailored shorts, skirt or skort will give that elegant, chic, put-together look.
Here is an example of that with this look:
This black and cream argyle printed cardigan from New Look is absolutely perfect for Autumn! I love that I can style this cardigan for a smarter look or a more casual look. With this cardigan, I have worn a short-sleeved knit jumper from Mint Velvet not only to keep it looking stylish, but for warmth (thinking ahead to the colder weather!). But I can opt for a white shirt or just a plain tee to wear under the cardigan.
For bottoms, I wanted something that had more of an edge and a different fabric from wool. So, I have opted for this leather skort from Friends Like These. I love the gold button detail on the front, and I love that it gives this outfit more of an edge.
For shoes, I have chosen my knee-high boots, which I wear quite a lot through the Autumn/Winter months. Also, this outfit would look great with a pair of black loafers or black flats if you wanted a work-style look.
I hope you have found these tips helpful for styling an argyle jumper or cardigan!
The main thing is not to overthink it! I know some find styling patterns hard or find that patterns can only be worn with one outfit - but that's not the case!
I'd love to know your thoughts on this argyle look I've put together!
