Visit an Ancient Capital

To truly understand a place, delve into its history. Sri Lanka is home to the city of Polonnaruwa, which became its capital in the 11th century. The city was a hive of activity for commerce, religion and government.

In modern times, the city is home to well-preserved ruins, deep reservoirs and impressive monasteries. Take time to wander around and soak in the history that permeates the soul of the buildings.

Remember to dress appropriately. Cover knees and shoulders in religious sites, and wear shoes that can easily be taken off, as some places require you to be barefoot.

The Lion’s Rock Lies Waiting

Arguably one of the most dramatic sights in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya is a rocky outcrop which rises high above the treetops. As you get closer, you will see the remains of a short-lived ancient civilisation.

King Kashyapa selected this ginormous rock as the new capital of his kingdom and built a palace right on top. The gateway to this structure was built in the form of lion’s paws, which remain to this day. After the kingdom fell, the buildings were used as a Buddhist monastery, which also made its mark on the architecture.

Traverse Kumana National Park

Sri Lanka is home to a plethora of incredible animals, including Malabar trogon, Sri Lankan elephants, Indian black turtles and leopards.

One of the best places to encounter these amazing creatures and many more is Kumana National Park. The park spans 357 square kilometres and is famed for its bird reserve as well as its tropical forest.

The best way to visit the park is to book a jeep tour. Typically, these last for 3.5 hours and are driven by an experienced spotter. Although they may not be the best at English, they are incredible at understanding the habits of the animals and doing their best to ensure you see as much as possible.

Wander the Streets of Galle

Galle is situated on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka. Its location meant that Galle was used extensively for trading. During the extensive history of the city, both Portuguese and Dutch settlers made their mark on the architecture of the city, most of which is evident as you wander through its streets today.

One of the most striking visuals in Galle is the lighthouse. Standing since 1848, the white tower is framed by the Indian Ocean and has been safely guiding ships to dock.

Galle Fort is a must-see when you are visiting. Stepping inside will help you to appreciate the seamless blend of old-world and new. Roaming the streets will lead you past restaurants, art galleries and cafes – perfect for resting weary feet! If you have time, be sure to stop at the Maritime Archaeology Museum to discover shipwrecks among the varied history of the area.
