It's been a while since I've written a book review. I've slipped into a reading slump of late. I tend to during the Summer months as I find myself saying - "It's too hot to read". I hope some can relate to that! However, I've finished a book over the Summer that I can finally share a review on - 'Someone is Lying' by Heidi Perks.
Let's set the scene:
Single mother Jess starts worrying when she doesn't hear from her daughter, Issie, on her 18th birthday. Issie and her boyfriend, Dylan, are currently travelling through Europe. The last anyone heard from them, they were in Lisbon. Jess and Issie have always shared an unbreakable mother-daughter bond, that is, until Dylan came into the picture.
Jess has never liked Dylan and thinks he's controlling her. When Issie announces she's travelling across Europe with him, Jess is devastated. She clearly doesn't trust him; however, she has to respect Issie's choice and let her go with a strained blessing.
Jess is convinced that something awful has happened to Issie when she doesn't hear from her for days. With Dylan refusing to talk, and the police unwilling to help, Jess is faced with her worst nightmare, and it's up to her to find out what's happened to Issie. But is it all as it seems?
What I liked about Someone Is Lying:
The whole book. The main characters were likeable, except Issie (you'll understand why if you read the book). The chapter lengths are perfect; they're not too long, and I ended up reading one more chapter because I couldn't put it down. This book is full of mystery and twists; it's a real page turner!
I love that the book focuses on a mother's love for their child and what lengths a mother would go to protect their children, no matter what they did or didn't do. It got me pondering how I would respond to a situation like this if I were ever to become a Mum.
I like that the book is split into three perspectives - Jess, Kay (Dylan's mum) and a crime podcast thrown in here and there.
What I disliked about Someone Is Lying:
Umm...nothing. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about this book!
My favourite moment of the book:
When the truth is revealed (which I cannot obviously reveal!)
Would I recommend Someone Is Lying by Heidi Perks?
Absolutely! This is definitely the best book I've read so far in 2025. This crime/thriller will certainly have you gripped that you will not want to put it down! This book highlights the lengths any mother would go to for their children and how Jess and Kay face their own moral dilemmas. This book looks at a mother's love and how easily it can be tested.
This book doesn't necessarily have a big twist, but the lack of that is made up for with the consistent tension and keeping my attention throughout.
I loved the podcast pages in the book, as each of those chapters set up the next part of the book nicely and added a nice flow to the book.
I found this book to be a compelling read and something I could see becoming a TV series one day. It certainly has the potential to be!
If you're looking for a good crime/thriller book, I couldn't recommend Someone Is Lying enough!
I really enjoyed the review, it looks like a novel I would enjoy, I like that the plot line is well paced and storyline told from different perspectives.
