I've learned many things since I began blogging all those years ago. One thing I have taken into consideration over the last few years is taking care of my well-being as a blogger. Blogging, for me, is like a full-time job. This year, I've made my blog my main income, as much as that is fantastic and a huge achievement on my part, I find it extremely difficult to switch off. Even though I've started taking care of my well-being on a blogging front, I've really had to make it a priority.
I know people will be sat reading this thinking "Blogging isn't a real job" and/or "Stop being a snowflake". However, unless you're a blogger/content creator yourself, you won't understand the full extent of work it takes to keep a blog running. That's why I and many bloggers need to look after ourselves and our well-being. Let's face it though, you need to look after yourself in any aspect of your life, not just your career/side hustle.
Here are the ways I'm looking after myself as a blogger:
1) Take a break when needing to
I know this is easier said than done, especially if this is your full-time job. But even if it's just for a day or two, it can have a beneficial impact on your well-being. As I said before, I find it hard to switch off now. However, deep down I know that taking a break before I hit burnout is vital. I try not to overload myself with work everyday as it can take its toll on my anxiety.
2) Make the most of my free time
When I finish with blogging/social media tasks for the day, I like to do the things I love to make sure I have a more accomplished, more fulfilling day. For me, it's things like reading, going for walks, doing skincare treatments and socialising. Doing the things I love away from blogging keeps my life in balance and keeps me present.
3) Saying no to the things that don't suit me
It's very easy to yes in blogging and social media. It can be hard to say no. However, in recent times, I have learned to say no to collaborations that I feel aren't right for me to work on. Saying no is a great form of self-care as you're not lowering your standards and you stand by what you believe in. I won't lie, I used to say yes to a LOT of things, believing the online exposure would benefit me. But half the time, it doesn't. Saying no is certainly not a bad thing!
4) Ensuring I get outside everyday
Even if it's just a drive to Morrisons to buy a couple of things or a walk around the block, I ensure that I get some outdoor light (weather dependant!). Walking outdoors has huge benefits for mental health, especially if you WFH. Getting that little bit of Vitamin D is good for the soul and helps to elevate my mood.
5) Keeping on top of fitness
Before I get stuck in to my to-do list, I always do a workout. I exercise for health reasons anyway, but doing a workout is an excellent way to start my day right regardless. It doesn't have to be a lengthy workout, even if it's just a half hour walk, weight training or a yoga sesh, knowing I've done a workout sets me up for the day ahead.
6) Leave social media alone every now and then
Taking social media breaks is so important. I like to step away from social media after a day of editing, promoting, liking posts and commenting. It's good to focus on my life away from social media after a long day of using my phone. When my phone is on charge, that's a couple of hours away from my phone where I can just chill and focus on my self-care and well-being. If people text me during that time, I won't rush to answer them unless its an emergency.
7) The mute/block button is my best friend
The last thing you need when you post a reel, photo or TikTok are nasty comments. Mute and block that person/persons, you don't need that negativity in your life. People who hide behind a screen are the biggest cowards. Just remember, you're a much better person.
8) Practicing gratitude/using daily affirmations
I'm grateful for my blog and have been for the last 8 years. It's important for me to practice gratitude and find a new daily affirmation to affirm belief in myself as a blogger and a person. There's nothing more satisfying than finding an affirmation that completely relates to how you're feeling. I like to practice gratitude everyday as it's a reminder for me what blessings I have in my life and what and who I'm lucky to have in my life.
Before I finish this post, I want to say a massive and heartfelt thank you to those who have supported me and my blog over the last 8 years, To those who have commented, shared and read my posts. There's not a comment, like and share that goes by that I'm not thankful for. I hope you will stick around with me for the next year and I promise to alway return the favour with you readers!
Taking breaks are an important because it helps with creativity and helps you to rest physically.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, taking breaks can allow the creative jucies to refill and flow again!
DeleteBreaks and saying no every now and again are ever so important!

Absolutely! You need to say no to help with well-being and also taking breaks helps with that too x
DeleteTake a step away from social media on a regular basis and don’t compare myself to other bloggers.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you take these steps to look after yourself in the blogging world Susan!
DeleteI have blogged for the same amount of years and I still love it. Totally agree on long walks. It always feels so good to get some sunshine and fresh air.

I'm glad to hear that you still love blogging as much as you did when you first started! It's always great to get some sunshine and air during the day x
DeleteOh wow it been 8 years! Time sure fly. As a blogger I got many burn out that I do not wish upon anyone. One of the things I'm trying to learn is to stop the doomscrolling since it's not helping me with my productivity and not to compare myself with other bloggers.
ReplyDeletewww.brokebutflawless.com
Time certainly does fly! Burnout is one of the worst things to experience and like you, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. Doomscrolling can really hinder creativity and productivity, so I try to avoid doing that at all costs! I used to compare myself with other bloggers an awful lot, these days I've curtailed that and don't do it anymore x
DeleteLove these tips and agree with all of them. Something I need to do is get better at taking breaks. I don't really give myself 'proper time off' which makes no sense, as in a 'normal job' you'd look forward to annual leave. I'm planning on taking some proper time off over Christmas though!

Getting into the habit of taking regular breaks can be difficult, but once you get into the habit of doing that, it's amazing how much it can help productivity and creativity! Like you, I don't really give myself 'proper time off' either, but we should! I'm so pleased to hear that you are giving yourself proper time off over Christmas, I think I need to do the same too! x
DeleteI'm so glad you found the tips helpful! Taking proper breaks is very important. Burnout symptoms are real. And giving yourself time to recharge is important. Christmas seems like the perfect time for a break and a fresh start. Enjoy the holiday you deserve!
DeleteTaking that time for yourself is important for your health and well-being!
ReplyDeleteThese are such great tips! I love taking a break every now and again! xx

DeleteThis are the things I do for myself as a blogger as well. No. 1 & 2 are the super priority. Yeah, the block button is my bff too. Hehehe ^_^
ReplyDeleteI like that you make points 1 and 2 a priority Fadima. Taking a break is important for your mindset and making the most of your free time can help you relax and switch off x
DeleteLove this! I used to say yes to everything but would get so burnt out. Now I am so picky and love the balance that I have.
ReplyDeleteI also take breaks - I don't announce them I just disappear for a bit and then squirrel away secretly and come back to it

I love that you're picky now, it's better to have balance than say yes to everything! I like that you squirrel away rather than announce that you're taking a break, that's how I'll do it when I need to take a break!
DeleteIt's SUCH a full time job isn't it, it was before it even became my full time job! I've had mine going for over nine years which is crazy x
ReplyDeleteIt really is such a full time job! Even before I took this on full-time, it felt like a full time job in itself! Nine years is incredible Gemma, I've adored your blog for years and I'm looking forward to reading more of your amazing content! x
