My Weird Self Care Habits

*Post contains previous PR items. See the end of the post for more details.

Self care is something that is constantly promoted by blogger's, the media, health professionals and even through family and friends.

There's no limit to the amount of self care habits you choose to have in your self care routine and every person's self care habits and routine are different to suit that person's needs, physically and mentally. Self care habits don't have to be short terms fixes such as a bubble bath or reading a book, it can be a long term fix such as establishing a self care routine for yourself and your personal needs.

My Weird Self Care Habits

For me personally, my self care habits and regime have changed over time. What I considered as self care in my early twenties doesn't benefit me anymore and that's ok. Times change, people move on. What I consider as self care now, my twenty year old self would have howled at and thought I was going insane. When cleaning out the fridge is part of your self care routine, you well and truly know that adulting has kicked in.

So, self care habits come in all shapes and sizes, and they benefit us all in contrasting ways. What are my weird self care habits I hear you ask? Well, since you asked:

1) SHAVING  MY  LEGS
___________
The women that can go through the whole Winter without shaving their legs, I salute you. I can't do that, I just can't. I hate my legs feeling hairy and stubbly. Nah, not my thing. So I am somebody who shaves her legs every week with her Estrid razor and it gives me the smoothest shave I have ever known (you can read my review for the razor here )

My Weird Self Care Habits

2) CLEANING  OUT  THE  FRIDGE
___________
Like I said in a paragraph or two above, liking to clean my fridge out has shown that I am achieving adulting at it's highest. Without a shadow of a doubt. I love getting out all those crumbs, food stains and whatever else from the shelves from the fridge, I even love cleaning the fridge in work. I don't know why, I find it oddly satisfying and my bosses must think I'm a weirdo. Well, they're not far off.

3) MEDITATING
___________
Meditating is such a great form of self care, it totally relaxes me and replenishes my mind. If I'm ever feeling anxious or restless, doing a bit of meditation, even it's just for five minutes, that time of refocusing my energy and just clearing my mind does me wonders. It's not a time consuming part of my self care routine, but it is one I find very valuable. I usually just find meditation videos on YouTube or do the free ones on the Fitbit app.

4) ORGANISING  MY  FINANCES
___________
Over the last couple of years, I've been learning how to budget properly and I find it oddly satisfying figuring out my finances every month. I love when I have enough money at the end of the month to add to my savings. I'm all for getting a mortgage now and seeing my savings increase is just so nice to look at every month!

5) STERILISING  MEDICAL  EQUIPMENT
___________
Every Wednesday (yes sadly I choose to do this on a particular day of the week) I clean my medical equipment such as my Aerobika (physiotherapy device) and my Eflow handset (a device I use to inhale my nebulised meds). It's kind a job which I don't really like doing but it's kind of like self care because these devices and machines are looking after my body, so yeah, this counts as self care, right?

6) FILLING  MY  TABLET  DOSSETT  BOXES
___________
Oh I love doing this on a Sunday! Again, I do this on a particular day of the week. I seriously need to get out more (oops, I can't can I?!)
Anyway, I love pushing out my tablets out their silver packets and getting them in my dossett box for the week ahead. It also gives me a chance to see what I need to order from the chemist that week for my prescription. It's a precarious operation I tell ya.

My Weird Self Care Habits

7) SINGING
___________
I may sound like a cat being strangled, but I love a good sing song. I ask Alexa to play a song which I know all the lyrics to and belt my heart out like I'm at the O2. Or even when I'm in the car on my own, I sing aloud, not a great idea in the Summer when the window is down, people do look at you funny.

8) WRITING  MY  WEEKLY  BLOGGING  TO  DO  LIST
___________
Something I do on a Sunday evening, I sit in bed and figure out the tasks I need to do for the week and it motivates me for the week ahead in terms of blogging. I do it in my Mal Paper planner and it's just a lovely constructive way to end my weekend and start my week on the Monday morning.

You may think that these self care habits of mine are weird, you may not and you may even consider these as part of your self care routine yourself, but these things are what I class as self care. Like I said near the beginning of this post, our self care routines are based on our personal needs and no one self care routine is the same. It's based on us as individuals.

Let me know if you have any weird self care habits of your own!

  1. I so desperately need to sort out my fridge. And the kitchen cupboards in general tbh. I'd love to get them organised a bit better. And I'm totally one of those girls who can let the leg hairs loose in Winter. Haha. I'm so lazy!!

  3. I also see making lists for blogging (and my hobbies) as part of my self care habits. And a little like your meditation, I love doing yoga videos before going to bed to relax - it's a little 10-min self-care session that I can do every day to unwind.
Really enjoyed reading this post! :)

  4. I honestly love reading your blog Lucy! Omg yes I can’t wait all winter to shave my legs 🙈 I have to do it like 1 - 2 times a week not after the cold season has passed. Self care for me is running a bath, face mask, reading my book in the bath and doing my nails. I also make myself relax and watch Netflix as I work a lot and don’t chill out properly very much. To do lists I also love to do!

  27. I feel the same way about organising the kitchen, I think it's because little tasks like putting those last few bits away always take a bit longer if I'm not feeling my best, so it feels GOOD when it's all organised and clean. Washing my makeup brushes is another one for me, I find it so relaxing these days and I used to absolutely dread it when I was younger x
