What Is A Media Kit & How To Create One

For those non blogger's wondering what the chuff I'm talking about, a media kit is kind of like a blogging CV. It's a graphic where brands can discover all about your stats, about you as a person, about your blog, what you blog about, what brands you have collaborated with in the past and it's a great opportunity to show off your creative talents and also allow brands to get to know you.

Now, some blogger's choose not to have a media kit, and that's ok. Media kits won't be every blogger's must need...accessory, if you like. It's not compulsory. For me personally, it's nice to have on standby if a brand ever asks for it. I made my first media kit back in 2018 and it wasn't the best. Back then, I barely had any collabs being thrown my way and my stats weren't brilliant, let's just say. These days however, my media kit is giving me such pride and joy. I love the satisfaction of updating it if my DA score goes up, if my numbers of followers go up or I reach any particular milestone in terms of stats.

One advantage of having a media kit is that if a brand emails you with a potential collab, rather than writing paragraph after paragraph giving a history lesson of your blog, you can just attach your media kit with no time wasted. Boom.

Before I started writing this post, my first thought was to write about why every blogger needs a media kit. But after looking at things again, I knew it wouldn't sit right, it would have come across quite bossy. So I thought I'd write it as if, for example, a blogger is reading this, media kitless, debating whether to make one themselves and are wondering how to even make one. Well my friends, your fairy blogging godmother (not literally, this isn't a Disney film) has come to your rescue and I will explain in this post how to make one. You may thank me later.

First things first, what app or program do you need to use to make it? Using Canva is a good media kit maker. It's free and it offers so many free media kit templates for you to edit. However, if you don't see any templates that take your fancy, you can always browse Etsy, which is where I bought a template from recently as I fancied a change from my Canva template. When making your media kit, have a play around with the fonts and colours to see what works best for you. When I make mine, I have kept to a similar colour scheme that I have on my blog and Instagram. Your media kit is then in keeping with your brand.

Now, you've set up your media kit (hurrah!) and you're looking at it blankly and wondering what the hell you need to write in it.

What you choose to write in your media kit is entirely up to you. You don't need to share any personal details about yourself, your blogging career is your main focus. Think of it this way, what are brands going to want to know about you? They're certainly not going to want to know your Nan's favourite make of kettle or that your cat growls like a dog. Here's what I include in my media kit:

  • A little intro about yourself. For example, your age, where you're from and hobbies. Include only what you feel comfortable with about your personal life.
  • A little paragraph about your blog, a brief overview of your blogging career. Make sure to mention what you blog about.
  • Your blogging and social media stats (eg monthly blogging views, number of followers on social media) including your DA score. Remember, be honest, brands will check everything. Also remember to include your social media links and/or handles.
  • Audience demographics. For example, what age range are most of your readers? What percentage of men and women follow you? Stuff of that nature.
  • How much you charge for your creative services eg sponsored posts, social media campaigns, product reviews etc.
  • Now it's time to do that bit of showing off and say what brands you've worked with previously!
  • Don't forget to include photos, I aim for the nicest photo's of myself and photos I've taken for past brand collaborations.

Make your media kit personal to you. Add that personal touch, that pizzazz. Write it however you want.

Your media kit should be no more than 2-3 pages long. Don't turn it into an eBook. That'll put off brands. At the end of the day, brands want a brief summary of everything, not a blogging edition of 'This Is Your Life'.

If you have any questions on how to make a media kit, please comment below and I'll do my best to help! But I do hope that this post has given you all the help you need to get that head start of creating your own media kit!
