A Birthday Like No Other

Yes, it's my birthday today and I'm turning 27. What will I be doing to celebrate this fine occasion? Nothing.

But I'm ok with that. Purely because I can't exactly go to town and neck vodka and cranberry juice all night - I'll be doing that at home instead.

Yes, as for quite a few of us, our upcoming birthday's are going to feel a little strange. No going out to celebrate, no birthday cake to blow the candles out on and no being told 'Happy Birthday' face to face, just on Facebook or when people see balloons float around on your Twitter profile.

It's quite weird celebrating a birthday in quarantine. Let's be honest, it's not a brilliant way to spend your birthday, but it's fine, I'm happy to get wished happy birthday on social media and shoot my birthday content which have seem to have become an annual custom now.

Like I said, a few of other's impending birthday's are going to be spent in isolation. In a weird way, it's nice to know I'm not the only one spending my birthday this way, it doesn't make me feel quite so alone.

In the last few weeks during lockdown, whenever I have said Happy Birthday to someone online, I'm always unsure whether to add "Have a great day!" straight after 'Happy Birthday' . Will they think I'm being incredibly sarcastic or just taking the absolute piss?! I'm generally a sarcastic person anyway, but I don't want to come across as too much of an arsehole.

It's not like we can go 'out out' and get absolutely rat arsed and eat a kebab down an alley in the early hours (not that I've ever done that anyway). Last year on my birthday was just a meal with friends in TGI Fridays, where I got sung Happy Birthday to by the staff as it's a TGI's tradition (yep, not embarrassing at all) and went to another pub for drinks afterwards.

What will I be doing this year? Hmm, I'm currently sat in a towel after having a bath wondering how much of the Victoria Sponge that is in the kitchen I can eat in one sitting. All I know is that I will make up for this birthday by going absolutely mental next year!

  1. Happy birthday lovely! I can imagine having a birthday in lockdown feels really weird although the way things are going, looks like a lot of us are going to have lockdown birthdays this year! My boyfriend's is at the beginning of June so I'm trying to plan it to be really special because I can't imagine we'll be able to go anywhere for it!

  2. Happy Birthday! I know how you feel, I had my lockdown birthday last week and it was incredibly strange - I'm just thankful that we have the likes of Facetime and such so that you can still sort of see loved ones at a time like this! Also I know what you mean about the "have a great day" thing - on one hand you don't want to come off as though you're taking the piss but on the other it's just the thing you say! I'm definitely looking forward to next years' birthday celebrations being a lot more mental!

  6. Hope you had a lovely birthday! My boyfriends birthday was the 1st of May and he said it didn't really feel much like a birthday as you can't go out and see all of your friends and family, but as you said, can always go even bigger with your birthday celebrations next year!

  10. Happy birthday!! I love your attitude here, it's a really weird time but at least you can take comfort in the fact we're all in the same boat. I can totally relate to what you said about 'have a great day'. I'm at a point where I'm absolutely clueless what to say to people now. My mum asked me about mine the other day, which is the end of July, and it felt really odd because we might be able to go out by then but making plans to do anything seems ridiculous at this point. I hope you enjoyed your Victoria sponge! x

    1. Thank you Sophie! I feel really stupid and sarcastic when I type 'have a good day' when it's somebody's birthday during this time, I feel like an idiot! I hope we're not in too much of a bad situation still by the time it's your birthday Sophie! I did enjoy the Victoria Sponge thank you! x
