The Castell Mynach, Pontyclun

*Ad - see disclaimer at the end of the post

When going out to eat, I'm always looking for places that aren't part of a big chain. I get fed up sometimes of having a cheeky Nando's or delving through the salad bar at the Harvester. I like going to the places that don't get tagged in people's Facebook statuses or Insta stories.

So when the Castell Mynach pub restaurant contacted me about going to their restaurant for lunch, it was a no brainer. Like I said, I'm always eager to try new places, it's good to give local businesses a chance rather than just keep going to the same big food chains all the time!

The Castell Mynach have recently had the place refurbished to a very high standard, but there was still a country feel inside which made the place welcoming and homely.

After being greeted by Gareth, the restaurant manager, we were shown to our table and I literally salivated over the menu! So much choice, some food I've never tried before. I'm one of nature's trier's, I like to eat different things and try them once before I say "I don't like that!". Working with kids, I try and teach them that they need to try the food first before they dismiss it out of hand just because it doesn't look appetising or appeasing in their eyes.

I digress - so after we were served our drinks, I opted for the prawn and lobster cocktail for starters and my Mam had the Soup of the Day which was tomato and balsamic with rustic bread.

It's confession time - I have NEVER eaten or tried lobster before in my life, after one mouthful, I am in love. The starter I had was absolutely stunning, just the right portion and warm up ready for my main course.

For my main course, I chose the Hand Made Lobster Fishcakes and my Mam chose the 8oz steak (she loves her bit of steak!) . Again, my main course was beautiful. It's lovely to eat something that doesn't come with chips! Don't get me wrong, I do love a good chip, but it's nice to have a change once in a while!

I couldn't face eating a dessert as I was already cradling a food baby after two courses!

Would I visit Castell Mynach again? Absolutely! The service we received was so friendly and they were so attentive to our needs. A big heads up to Gareth for making us feel welcome and providing us with a friendly service and for just being so lovely!

If you're looking for a restaurant that can offer great food in friendly surroundings and also receive brilliant service, Castell Mynach is the place for you!
