How I Would Like To Adjust My Morning Routine

Did you know it takes the average person 66 days to establish a new routine? The time frame can vary, but it takes about 2 months to fully establish a new routine. Wanting to create new habits and routines is a big thing for anyone to do, especially when you have a set routine in place already. Consistency is key when creating and putting a new routine in place. When it comes to my routine, I am somewhat satisfied with it, but there are things I'd like to change, especially for my morning routine.

I truly believe that having a healthy morning routine sets a precedence for the day ahead.

I think establishing a good morning routine helps productivity, fights procrastination and aids motivation. I know that if I wake up early, I know I'll have a productive day ahead as I won't feel as sluggish as I would if I stayed in bed. As someone who is conquering freelancing, a good morning routine is key for me to remain productive and creative.

There are some things I already do in my routine that others may like to do too:

1) Change out of my pyjamas into my workout clothes

I know so many struggle to find the motivation to get out of their PJs, but to jump from pjs first thing to workout clothes is an even harder ask. I'm someone who hates sitting in their pyjamas for long periods after waking up, it makes me feel unclean and bleh. I like to get changed out of my pjs ASAP in the mornings. As I work out pretty much every day, getting changed into my gym clothes first thing makes sense to me.

2) Doing a morning workout

I much prefer doing a workout in the mornings. I know for some that it's not possible to achieve that and it's only possible to do in the late afternoon/evenings, but a good workout helps set me up for the day. As long as I have the time, I will always start my day with a workout before opening my emails!

3) Complete my skincare routine

My morning skincare routine is one of my favourite parts of my day. Whether I'm starting my day with my CurrentBody mask or my ZIIP Halo, doing my morning skincare routine makes me feel good to start the day. I always cleanse, moisturise, dab and wash my skin every morning without fail.

4) Complete my morning medication

For those who don't already know, I have a condition called Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic condition that requires me to do an awful lot of medication, physiotherapy and treatments. Doing my morning meds is a HUGE part of my morning routine and I have so much to fit in in the first few hours of my day. So being organised is key for me every day.

5) Having breakfast

I know some choose to skip breakfast, but I'm a huge believer in breakfast being the most important meal of the day. I usually just have a bowl of Shreddies for breakfast, it always fills me up until lunchtime. From a diabetic's POV, breakfast is an absolute must.

Now I've discussed the things I already do in my morning routine, here are the adjustments I'd like to make to my morning routine:

1) No social media before getting up

This is one adjustment I need to seriously make. I am super guilty of scrolling before I get out of bed. I always lose track of time and before I know it, I've scrolled through TikTok and Instagram for 20 minutes without realising! I know for a fact that if I leave my phone until after I've changed or had breakfast, I get tasks completed a lot quicker.

2) Setting an alarm to wake up

Rather than relying on my body clock, I need to start relying on an alarm to wake me up. I'm one for snoozing. I would like to get into the habit of setting my alarm 10 minutes before waking up so it gives my body the chance to awaken slowly but more sensibly.

3) Drink lemon water in the morning

Apparently, lemon water has plenty of benefits, including improving energy levels, hydration and digestion. I usually just have a glass of water first thing in the morning, but adding some drops of lemon would benefit me much more.

4) Check my to-do list

I tend to write my to-do list the night before as it makes me feel prepared for the next day. More often than not, I forget to add some tasks to it and there end up being more tasks to do than originally intended. Whether it be my social media calendar or life admin, always double-check your to-do lists!

The morning routines are the routine that is the most important one of the day.

I'm an avid believer that if you have a good start to your morning, you're heading for a good rest of the day. I know that if I have a bad start to my morning, I know the day ahead is going to be bleh, sluggish and drag on.

So, I'm embracing these morning routine adjustments and I'm going to do my best to stick with them. Here's to better mornings!

I'd love to know your thoughts!

  1. My mornings are always a it chaotic getting everybody out of the house on time for school. That being said I have started forming a good 'morning routine' once I've dropped them off at school. I start with a 15-20 min dog walk which I think is so beneficial, it's like a refresh on the day.

    1. I can imagine that it's a rush in the mornings getting everybody out of the house to get to school on time! I like that you have started to form a morning routine after the school drop-off Claire, walking your dog is a brilliant start to the day as you're getting plenty of fresh air! x

  2. As a new mom, my mornings are often a bit chaotic trying to get the baby ready for daycare. I’ve been making little changes to my routine, such as using a red light lamp and doing yoga that has been helping me change some of this.

    1. I hope this post has given you some ideas to add to your morning routine Eleanor! I'm trying to get into the habit of not checking my social media first thing, it does help start my day off quicker than if I were to check it!

  4. I really need to get a morning routine going myself! Like you, medicine also plays a heavy part of my morning (I have a couple of neurodevelopmental disabilities that I have to take medication for, in addition to anxiety and depression). It becomes tough when I have to rush in the mornings sometimes!
