Snapchat vs. Instagram: Which One Is Best for Bloggers?

*This is a collaborative post.

With social media today, bloggers are constantly searching for the best platforms to share their content, connect with their audience and build their brand. When it comes to social media platforms, Snapchat and Instagram are deemed the two most popular choices, each boasting unique features and engaging styles. However, which one is the best for bloggers? To answer this question, let’s explore the key differences between Snapchat and Instagram, the strengths of each, and why one may be more suitable for your blogging needs than the other.

A Quick Overview: What’s the Difference Between Snapchat and Instagram?

Snapchat and Instagram share similarities - they’re visually centred, rely heavily on images and videos, and have features that encourage followers to engage with content in real time. Yet, they cater to distinct audiences and offer unique user experiences.

Snapchat, launched in 2011, is primarily known for its short span of photos. Its trademark is that snaps disappear within 24 hours, creating a sense of urgency and even exclusivity. Instagram, was created and launched in 2010. It then evolved drastically after being acquired by Facebook (now Meta) in 2012. Instagram is a mix of permanent and temporary content. From Stories that vanish 24 hours after being posted and photos that remain on your profile indefinitely, Instagram provides a range of options for both short and long-term content.

Let’s dig deeper.

1) Security

Both social networks offer their methods of protecting users. Is Snapchat encrypted? Yes, but is it enough? Snapchat safety may be average globally, but a significant part still depends on users. To ensure privacy on Snapchat or Instagram, you will have to take additional measures. For example, study Snapchat dangers, use VPN when accessing, hide location, etc. In short, both social networks have created security features, but this is not enough without measures from users.

2) Content Formats and Flexibility

Both platforms allow for a variety of content, but Instagram has the upper hand when it comes to flexibility. Here’s a closer look:

Instagram: From traditional posts to Stories, Reels, IGTV, and even Shopping features, Instagram offers a rich tapestry of content types that cater to various blogging needs. You can post photo carousels, go live with followers, or make a Reel to engage users with short, viral-style videos.

Snapchat: With its primary focus on ephemeral content, Snapchat is perfect for spontaneous updates and exclusive glimpses into a blogger's life. Bloggers can use Snaps and Stories, create custom filters, and even experiment with augmented reality lenses. Additionally, Snapchat is for bloggers seeking a one-stop platform for various content types, while Instagram stands out. But Snapchat’s unique features - like private Snaps and interactive filters—may appeal to those who value real-time connections.

3) Engagement and Interaction

When it comes to engagement, both platforms have distinctive strengths. Instagram’s likes, comments, and shares are public, which can create a sense of community and interaction. Hashtags on Instagram also allow bloggers to reach users outside their immediate following, making it easier to grow your audience.

In contrast, Snapchat has private engagement. This social network is more suitable for communication with close friends or just acquaintances. Hence the need to use a VPN for Chrome to protect against potential threats. Followers can respond to Snaps with direct messages, but it’s less about public comments or likes. This privacy can encourage more personal, one-on-one interactions, ideal for bloggers wanting a closer connection with their audience.

4) Analytics and Monetisation

If you're a blogger and you're looking to grow your blog and monetise it, then analytics is your best friend. Instagram provides a detailed Insights feature that tracks followers, impressions, reach, and engagement, giving bloggers the much-needed data to refine content strategies. Snapchat’s analytics are a little more limited, mostly available to verified accounts and brands using Snapchat Insights.

Monetisation is another area where Instagram pulls ahead. With features like Instagram Shopping and branded content partnerships, bloggers can generate revenue directly through the platform. Snapchat has started experimenting with monetisation through features like Spotlight and Creator Shows, but these are still developing and aren’t as accessible to the average blogger.

5) Advertising

Potential Advertising is a key aspect for bloggers looking to expand their reach. Instagram’s advertising system is integrated with Meta’s, allowing users to target audiences with precision. Snapchat Ads are engaging and innovative, with options like Snap Ads, Story Ads, and AR Lenses. However, Instagram’s ads tend to have a broader reach and more extensive targeting capabilities due to Meta’s advanced ad technology.

Statista reports that Instagram’s ad revenue was projected to reach around $33.2 billion in 2023, while Snapchat’s ad revenue was projected at $4.3 billion. This stark contrast indicates the sheer potential Instagram holds for bloggers interested in using ads for growth.

Final Thoughts: Which One is Best for Bloggers?

So, Snapchat or Instagram? For bloggers who want to cultivate a more personal, spontaneous vibe with a young, engaged audience, Snapchat is the right fit for you. Snapchat’s temporary content, playful features, and direct engagement offer a unique way to connect on a personal level.
Instagram offers more long-term goals in terms of monetisation. It's crazy how you can make a career for yourself via Instagram these days.

Both platforms have unique advantages, so the decision depends on the blogging style, target audience, and long-term goals. But one thing is certain—either platform can help you build a following and create content that resonates. The key is to choose the one that aligns best with your voice and your audience’s preferences.

  1. I can see how (depending on the type of blog, etc.) that Snapchat could be a really beneficial marketing opportunity and way to share content. I don't use it myself, although I do have an account that I rarely use (I'm probably not the right demographic) and find that Instagram is most useful for my site. Very interesting comparison!

  3. I've never really thought of using Snapchat for blogging purposes before. It's always just been something between close friends but you've raised some interesting points. I definitely feel like I need to find a new way of promoting posts though.

  4. Great in-depth comparison, Lucy! I used to use Snapchat but moved away from it when it started to decline in my social group. I miss all the fun filters, though! I only recently got back on IG after deleting the platform and enjoy it much more than Snapchat myself. I didn't realize shopping was an option on IG! Must not be available in Canada yet.

  6. Great comparison! If you’re looking to create a more personal and spontaneous connection with a younger audience, Snapchat is definitely the way to go with its temporary content and engaging features. However, for those focused on long-term growth and monetization, Instagram is unmatched with its potential for building a brand and career. Both platforms have unique strengths, so it really depends on your goals as a blogger!

  7. I'm not a snapchat gal, so it's been really useful reading this to see what it's all about. Sounds like a lot of it depends on your audience. Snapchat definitely feels like it's for the younger folk out there. I need to probably utilise Instagram more for my blog. Sometimes I think the two feel quite disconnected. Thanks for the inspo boost!

  9. I haven’t used snapchat, but I always thought it’s for a more close personal interactions with people you know. I didn’t think it could be used by bloggers as well. Good to know more about snapchat. I can see how it can be helpful for bloggers looking for a closer one to one interactions. Thanks!

  12. Thanks for putting this together, I learn best in this type of format! I've always been a Facebook/Instagram user but have wondered where Snapchat shines best. I think I'll stick with Instagram, but it makes me wonder if I should at least try Snapchat.. if anything, I'll at least wait for that endeavor since we're pretty busy with renovations and cabinet refacing, but when we finally slow down, maybe I'll give it a shot! Thanks for posting this!
