Second Hand September: What is it and Where To Get Started

For a while, I've become more consciously aware of what clothes I buy and have cut back on impulse purchases. Clothing and fast fashion are among the biggest contributors to climate change and the environment. If we all do our little bit, we can all reduce our carbon footprint and be mindful of where we buy our clothes from and how much we buy. A way in which we can all contribute to this is by participating in Second Hand September.

Firstly, what is Second Hand September?

Second Hand September is an Oxfam initiative encouraging people to buy second-hand items throughout September. Oxfam launched this initiative to get people to think about giving pre-loved items a second chance and a new home. By buying second-hand items, you are reducing your carbon footprint. It may seem small, but it can make a huge difference. This initiative was launched by Oxfam as a response to the current environmental impact that fashion has on our climate.

What if I'm wary about buying second-hand clothes?

Honestly, I felt the same about buying second-hand clothes. I thought that buying new off-the-rail clothes would be better as they would be better quality and would last longer. Since I created a Vinted account over a year ago, I have bought more second-hand clothes than from the high street. If you know what to look out for when it comes to buying second-hand clothes, you'll find some amazing clothing that you can give a new home to. If you're unsure of what to look out for when buying second-hand clothes, read this post I wrote about Vinted tips here.

Ok, where do I get started with Second Hand September?

Firstly, I'd look over your spending habits. Are you spending far too much on clothes every month? Are you buying into trends as soon as they come in? If the answer is yes to both these questions, then this is the perfect opportunity to cut back and start to buy second-hand items.

An example of a method I use is this - if you're yearning for a piece that is out of stock from your favourite high street store, search for it on platforms like Vinted or Depop. You may find it at a fraction of the price or even find something similar. The same goes for charity shops, find where your local charity shops are and sift through the rails and you may find what you're looking for.

If you have found something you like, hooray! Now, this is where you check the item for wear and tear, holes, snags, stains or defects. If it's fixable or washable, then it's worth buying. If the damage is too much or the stains are unremovable, then leave it. It's not worth buying something that can't be salvaged.

Does Second Hand September only apply to clothes?

Absolutely not! Second Hand September applies to furniture, books etc. DIY upcycling has been an evergrowing trend in recent years. Something as simple as a new lick of paint or *new handles can change the appearance of something like a bedside table drastically (for the better!)

Honestly guys, buying second-hand has changed my spending habits.

I've noticed a remarkable difference in the way I spend money and what I spend money on. I much prefer buying second-hand than buying new these days. I will be honest, there are certain items I will buy new as I don't feel comfortable buying them second-hand. These include -

*Trainers (unless their BNWT)
*Pyjamas
*Underwear (no, just no)

But for the majority of other types of clothing, I'm happy to buy second-hand.

If you attempt the Second Hand September challenge, you will make such a difference to your carbon footprint and you will notice a difference in your spending habits.

I'd love to know if you will be taking part in Second Hand September!

  1. I’m loving the revival of the long cargo skirt! It’s fantastic to see how versatile it can be for different occasions. Your casual look with the ribbed tank top, shrug sweater, and sneakers is perfect for everyday wear. The transition to a night-out look with the Chelsea boots and mock neck top adds a chic and edgy touch that’s great for fall. The skirt’s utility details combined with its stylish fit make it a standout piece. Thanks for the outfit inspiration!

  2. I love the idea of second hand sept! I've had such bad experiences so I'd never buy from Vinted (poor quality stuff that isn't worth buying!) but charity shops are a great option!

  5. Since I started practising intentional living, I've become hyper conscious of my spending habits. I recently met a girl who only buys from Vinted and it really encouraged me to make the effort to buy second hand. Thanks for reminding me, Lucy. ✨

  6. Loved this post! I’m a regular thrifter and always encourage other people to shop second hand so this post was right up my street. Vinted is amazing for second-hand clothes and books. I shop on there a lot! I’ve got a couple of local places I go for second-hand furniture too and try and support my community and donate there when I can!

Hope this post encourages more people to pick up at least 1 thing second-hand in September! Love this concept. Xx

  8. I've never heard of Second Hand September but I love it! Thank you for introducing the concept. To kill time with the little one, we always head over to our local thrift store.

Over the past years, I learned to love thrifting. It's environmentally conscious, cheaper, and finding unique items is such a rush! I went through a bad phase of being addicted to Poshmark and had to tone it down, haha!
