The Ultimate Guide To Finding The Perfect Evening Gown

*[AD] If you're going to a formal event like a wedding or an awards party, the right evening gown can make all the difference. Choosing the right evening gown will help you stand out, look elegant and even ooze confidence. There are many styles of formal gowns to choose from, and sometimes it can feel overwhelming to choose a dress to suit you. Not only because of the different styles but also because of the different colours, lengths, and fabrics. It can feel like walking into a minefield!

I've put together this guide on how to find yourself the perfect evening gown, these tips I'm sure will help you find the ideal formal gown should you need to one day!

Here are tips to help you find the perfect evening gown:

1) Knowing your body shape

The key to choosing an evening gown is knowing your body type. You want to wear an evening dress that accentuates your figure and that you will feel incredible in. If you're unsure which type of dress will suit your body, buy an A-line gown with a v-neck. These types of dresses suit every figure and body type, and you'll look gorgeous!

2) Choosing the colour of the dress

Choosing the colour of your dress is equally as important as choosing the style of the dress. You don't want to wear a colour that will make you look washed out in photographs. If you have a warmer skin tone, opt for colours such as reds, oranges and yellows. For cooler skin tones, opt for blues, greens or purples. When all else fails, you cannot fault a black dress, it's such a classic and works for everyone!

3) What event is the dress for?

While evening gowns are versatile, some may only be suited for some events. For example, for an event like a prom, a long or short dress will be suitable. For a beach wedding, a shorter dress would be better than trying to drag a long dress along the sand. For an awards do or a similar formal event, a long dress would be better suited.

4) Keep tailoring in mind

As we know, brand's sizing differs from each other. For example, you could be a size 12 in one store, but in another store, you may need to size up or down. However, if you have fallen in love with a dress you've seen online or in-store and it's too long, that's what tailors are there for. It wouldn't cost a lot and if you're planning on keeping the dress forever, then it's worth it.

5) Less is more and don't follow the latest trends

Trends don't last guys, stick to classic shapes and styles. Also, less is more. Don't overload on the accessories as they will steal the dress' thunder.

That is my ultimate guide to finding the perfect evening gown!

I hope this guide has helped you determine how to find the perfect formal gown for those big occasions. I know it can be overwhelming to choose the right gown for the big event/formal occasion. But if you keep these tips in mind, I know you'll find the perfect gown for you and one you will look fabulous in!

  1. I've booked a cruise next year and was looking for a dress for formal night. I was wondering what colours I would suit but now I know what colours my skintone compliments, I feel a lot clearer to continue my search.

  2. These are excellent tips. I agree with not investing in trends. If you have spent money on a quality gown you would prefer an item that was classic. That way you can wear it again.

    1. There's just no point investing in trends when it comes to evening gowns, it's better to buy something more classic, then it can be worn again and again!

  3. I love this! I don't tend to dress up much but I went to a wedding recently and opted for blue. I didn't realise this about skin tones etc. though so that's very helpful. These items look gorgeous :)

  10. I'm starting to learn that less is more when it comes to formal wear but I struggle a bit because I was just reunited with all of my jewellery after 2 years and now I want to wear all of them at once... Gotta keep it subtle though, tasteless is not the vibe I want to go for 😅
