When I first started my period many, many years ago, my go-to menstrual products were sanitary pads. Back then, they were a lot more bulky and somewhat uncomfortable to wear. Trying to get them to stick on lace undies was a barrel of laughs - not. Now, if you told me back then that in years to come, you could buy REUSABLE pads - I'd have laughed in your face.
It's honestly incredible and revolutionary how far times have come since my teens when it comes to menstrual products. These days, reusable sanitary products have become a lot more worthy of investment. Apparently, women have a period on average of 2535 days of their life. So, I'd definitely say that sustainable period products are worth parting your money with.
Now, when it comes to sustainable period brands and their products, I've used a fair few over the years. From trying period pants for the first time to staring at a menstrual cup and thinking, "How the hell do you put that 'up there'?". I've used quite a few and most brands and products I've tried I've been genuinely happy with.
So, which sustainable period product brands are worth it? Here are five brands I trust and love (in no particular order) -
1) Riley
Riley is an Irish brand created by three women over a glass of wine. That's the way to go about things in my eyes! Anyway, I've used their pads and even their probiotic tablets and I've never been disappointed. You can build your own customised period box using their products. They even do a 'First Period' bundle for all those young girls who are starting their period. Such a clever idea and initiative.
2) Yoppie
Yoppie was the first sustainable period product brand I tried. They have created a wide range of products to help when you're on your period. From the standard pads and tampons to face masks to help with any skin issues during your menstrual cycle. They are a London-based brand and their products are cruelty-free.
3) Ohne
This brand encouraged me to try period pants for the first time, and since then, I haven't looked back. Period pants are the one, just saying. No bulkiness of large pads and no worrying about any unfortunate leakage. Unfortunately, Ohne is no longer operating now, which is a shame because their period pants are incredibly comfy and I use them every month.
4) WUKA
Another period pant brand which I fully get on board with. I tried these a while back and they are honestly so comfortable and stylish. *WUKA sell a range of pants by flow. You can buy period pants from heavy flow to medium flow to light flow. WUKA also sell products for women who are going through menopause, girls who are just starting their period, incontinence pants to even - get this - SWIMWEAR. WUKA have created period swimwear. You can go swimming on your period now. Now I would say is revolutionary!
5) INTIMINA
Over the years, I have used a variety of INTIMINA's products. From their KegelSmart to help with the pelvic floor to their moisturising balm, I've used a range from their website! They also sell menstrual cups, which I'm a little nervous about trying again. The reason is that I got so wary of not being able to get it out once I needed to. Perhaps I'll get some courage one day and try it again!
There are a wide range of brands that sell sustainable period products.
These are the ones I have tried in the past and will happily use again. It's great that there are so many options out there for young girls today who are about to start their menstrual cycle. It can be a daunting time, especially as there's a wide range of period products to try. It's important to use products that you're comfortable with, not what your friends use.
This was a really helpful post as I want to start looking at more sustainable period products, so thank you for this post and I'll definitely be looking at these brands!

Sustainable period products like these are amazing and are so much better for the environment! I hope you take a look at these brands in the future Emilia!
DeleteI'm big on sustainable period products. I actually haven't used anything disposable for must be around 5 years or so now. I'm sure it was just after having Amelia I made the switch. One thing I've not tried however is the cups. I'm like yourself, I'd be so worried about removing it. It feels so faffy when you can just wear period pants or reusable pads. Also that stat about how many days we have period for is wild!

I agree Claire, menstrual cups are faffy and I would be weary about trying to remove it afterwards! I'm all for wearing period pants as they're so comfortable and I don't need to worry about any leakage!
DeleteThat stat blew my mind too Claire! x
The only brand I recognise is WUKA, as Flora has some of their pants and loves them. But it's amazing how far we've come down the sustainable period road! x
ReplyDeleteI agree Lisa, it's amazing to see the progress of sustainable mesntrual products and how many different options there are for us out there! x
DeleteI've tried Riley's pads and WUKA's period pants, and they're both great brands! It is a shame that Ohne shut down.
ReplyDeleteRiley and WUKA are great sustainable period product brands! Yes it's a shame about Ohne as their period pants are great and I still use them today!
DeleteThese brands sound lovely. Btw, how is it like using the menstrual cup. I'm still scared to use it. Huhuhu...
ReplyDeleteUsing the menstrual cup is an experience, put it that way! But I think with more practice, I'll start using it more!
DeleteSo many amazing brands, I really want to give Wuka a try! Organicup is my favourite xx
ReplyDeleteWUKA are such an amazing brand Della, their period pants are so comfy! I need to have a look at Organicup xx
DeleteThese sound like some great suggestions. I've used a cup for quite a few years now and never had a problem. As much as I love the idea of period pants, I just can't face any extra washing right now. I definitely think sustainable is the way to go though. Not only is it better for the environment, its better for our bank balance too.
ReplyDeleteThat's fair enough Kelly, it's good that you have never had any problems with using a menstrual cup! Sustainable is definitely the way to go now!
DeleteReading this post opened my eyes to a whole new world of sustainable period products! I've never tried any of these before, but now I'm excited to explore and do my research. Thanks for sharing your experiences and recommendations, Lucy! xx

I’m not from the UK so I’m not aware of these brands. However, their products seem great and I may look for brands that make similar products in my country. I’ve been thinking of looking for more sustainable options for a while now. I think menstrual cup is a great option, but I’m scared of trying it too. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can find similar brands and products from where you're from Sneha! The menstrual cup is a little daunting to try!
DeleteRiley's products are amazing aren't they? I love their pads as they're comfortable to wear and don't feel bulky!
ReplyDeleteThis has reminded me to look into swapping over more items to sustainable ones. It's great to see that there are more and more brands available now, so there is something for everyone!
