Karen Perry is an author I hadn't heard of until I picked up this book. Apparently, this is her newest release and she mainly writes thriller and mystery books.
So, what's this book about?
The book centres around Faye, a woman who has her life finally on track. She has a husband who loves her, a good circle of friends and a thriving career in Ireland. However, Faye is hiding a dark secret which only her ex Michael knows. When Faye starts to get threatening notes at work from someone anonymous, she starts to think it's Michael, whom she ends up meeting to straighten things out. Michael vehemently denies that it's him, but is he telling the complete truth?
Faye strongly believes that it's Michael sending these threatening notes even though he's denied it. However, on a writing retreat, Faye's husband Ed befriends a new friend called 'Jamesie' who could tear her world apart.
How long can Faye keep her secret?
We do find out Faye's secret as we go through the book as the plot is split into two perspectives. The present-day and back in 2010 when Michael and Faye were stuck in Barcelona because of the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud grounding flights.
Would I recommend The Worst Thing You Ever Did?
This book is one of those books that just fell a little flat for me. The story didn't really grip me until the last 3-4 chapters of the book. Those chapters did have me on the edge of my seat!
I felt that this book left me with a lot of answered questions. The ending felt rushed as we didn't really get Ed's reaction to his wife's big secret. As I was reading through, I could sense what the plotline was going to be at the end, but it still gripped me in those last few chapters.
As Faye fell pregnant at the start of the book, she went through a lot of unnecessary stress which didn't help by her husband sticking up for his new friend over her on a certain occasion (won't reveal anything here). He should have listened to Faye, that's all I'm saying! Ed is a bit of a wet blanket though.
Even though I kind of predicted how it was going to end, it was a gripping read near the end of the book, which is why I don't totally dislike this book.
*Trigger warning - this book deals with mental health and death.
My sister is currently reading this and loving it. I have asked to have it after her

I'm glad to hear that your sister is enjoying the book! It is definitely gripping in the final few chapters x
DeleteI haven't heard of this book, but I am a big fan of thrillers. The plot does sound interesting, but I think I'll give it a pass
ReplyDeleteThe plot is good, but I just didn't get on with it unfortunately!
DeleteIt's a shame this fell flat as the premise of the story itself sounds as if it has lots of potential. I've read books like this too where it's the last few chapters that get interesting but it's a rush and things are left unanswered. Thanks for the honest review!
ReplyDeleteThe plotline definitely had a lot of potential, but as you say, it just fell flat for me!
DeleteThis sounds like such a good read, it's a shame that it didn't get gripping until the end x
ReplyDeleteYeah it just fell flat until the last few chapters, so annoying as this book had a good premise! x
DeleteGreat review! It sounds like this book had potential, but it's too bad it wasn't gripping until the last few chapters. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt definitely did have potential, but it fell short of that unfortunately!
DeleteThat's a shame it fell flat. Thrillers are one of my fav genres! I've never really been into rom-coms unless on holiday around a pool!

DeleteSounds like a book I like to read. I shall check it out. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you would love this book too Fadima!
DeleteIt was interesting to read about a different genre of book, Lucy (I tend to read self development or chick lit myself). Here's to hoping your next book doesn't fall flat. ✨
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading a new book and it's not falling flat right now!
DeleteSuch a shame it fell a bit flat. I think it can be really difficult to get thrillers right sometimes. I always enjoy a two point perspective though, I find that ramps up suspense a little bit. I hope your next read will have a bit more pizazz!
