Helping To End #SunPoverty With Escentual

*This sunscreen was sent to me as part of a campaign from Escentual. See the end of the post for more details.

I'm someone who is a huge advocate of applying SPF daily - even in the Winter. Ok, I don't slaver sunscreen on as much in the Winter as I do in the Summer, but protection from UVB rays is so important. Even on the cloudiest of days, I'll still wear a factor 30 or 50. For me, it's essential that we raise awareness of how important SPF and sunscreen are for our skin, especially for children. This is where Escentual has come in with this huge and incredibly wonderful campaign.

Did you know that 80% of sun damage happens before you turn 18? Frightening isn't it? When you think about it, all the times I've played on the playground on scorching days, sat on the grass for long sports days and walked to lessons in high school, the sun has definitely burnt my skin once or twice. An even more frightening stat is that 16.2k people get diagnosed with skin cancer every year. So why aren't we doing more to stop it?

So, Escentual is aiming to end #SunPoverty.

Escentual's campaign is to end the VAT on children's sunscreen and educate school children on the importance of sun safety and protection. They will also donate thousands of bottles of SPF 50+ sunscreen to children whose families are struggling. For every bottle of Escentual sunscreen and lotion that is sold on their website, they donate a bottle of SPF 50+ sunscreen to a child in a school who is on free school meals. Escentual are aiming to ensure that all primary school children have free sunscreen. A challenge which I'm sure they will succeed at with our help! What a wonderful initiative!

So, why is it important to wear SPF daily?

1) It reduces the risk of skin cancer

This is as good a reason as anything to buy some sunscreen. Wearing SPF can reduce the risk of certain skin cancer, especially melanoma. It's important to wear sunscreen when you're outdoors for prolonged periods for example, on holiday, if your job is based more outdoors (postman, builder etc). The higher the SPF factor you use, the more protected your skin will be.

2) It reduces the risk of sunburn

I would rather wear SPF than like look like Sebastian the lobster in Little Mermaid. Sunbathing is all well and good, but I think some are under the impression that wearing sunscreen diminishes the chances of getting a tan. What a load of rubbish! You can still get a perfectly good tan even when you wear a high SPF sunscreen. If you're worried about not getting a proper tan, then buy a fake tan. Simples. Sunburn can severely scar and damage the skin, wear sunscreen guys.

3) It prevents the signs of ageing

Repeated sun exposure can have a huge negative impact on the skin. One of the big annoyances is WRINKLES. I don't want to look like a creased bedsheet when I'm 50. I'll be wearing sunscreen as often as I can to prevent as few wrinkles as possible. I don't fancy premature ageing of my skin because of the lack of wearing sunscreen. It's also important to make sure that you reapply sunscreen every couple of hours to guarantee protection - even if you're indoors.

I hope you can get behind Escentual's #SunPoverty campaign - let's get skin cancer cancelled! For more information on the campaign and about sun safety, follow these links for more information:

  5. What a great campaign! I'm so much more clued up on sun safety now that I was when I was a child so it's definitely something that needs to be drilled in earlier!

  6. I try and let my kids have a little bit of sun as they both have eczema and small doses of UV can do their skin the world of good. Small boy has had a dry patch about 2 inches long on his calf, that he scratches till it bleeds, for at least 7 months and hydrocortisone hadn't cleared it up. The nicer weather, shorts and factor 30 instead of 50 has somehow led to it healing right up.

    1. It's good that small doses of UV rays help your children's eczema. I'm sorry that the hydrocortisone hasn't cleared up that dry patch on your youngest's leg. It's good though that the SPF 30 has helped it heal!

  7. I had no idea that most sun damage happens before 18, but when you think about it it's not that surprising. Like you say, all the sitting outside, sports days and walking to school. This is such a brilliant campaign, as when you think about it suncream should be easily available and not cost the earth, as it's made to help prevent cancer, and no one should be priced out of that xx

Absolutely, people should not be deprived of something which can help to prevent skin cancer, no matter what age you are xx

  8. What a great campaign to be able to help people keep children safe in the sun. I must say that when I was younger my mum would always make sure we had sun cream on and reapply after the pool or the sea. Thank you for sharing. I haven’t actually heard of this brand before.

  12. I love this initiative and that they're donating sunscreen to children in schools. I agree, everyone deserves to have the products and tools to help protect them from something nasty down the line. It's terrifying to think about all the times I got burnt on holiday as a kid - not through neglect of not wearing sunscreen but just from how hot it was and the fact that I'm so fair.

    1. It's such a brilliant initiative and I love their mission to make sure every school child gets sunscreen. As you say, SPF prevents something horrible from happening in later life. As a child, you just don't think about SPF and sun safety, so I'm glad this campaign allows us to educate children on that!

  13. I didn't realise the statistics before your Instagram post the other day! It's so worrying that the majority of skin damage is caused before you turn 18. Makes me worry about the girls! I'm definitely going to be more forceful with sun cream going forward. I'd hate to think how damaged my own skin is from the sun. Week. What a great post & a fantastic campaign!

  15. Wow! What an amazing cause. I absolutely love everything that they are doing. It’s so important to wear SPF, I didn’t realise how important until the last couple of years. My dad was diagnosed with skin cancer and had to have quite a big op to remove it all. That literally put my butt into gear and now I smother everyone in factor 50 suncream! Thank you so much for sharing this with us lovely Xo

  17. I wish I was more clued up on the damage the sun can do to you when I was younger, I'm an advocate for wearing sunscreen on my face everyday now, but I still definitely need to listen to myself when it comes to sunscreen on my body! I religiously remember when I'm on holiday but I seem to always forget when I'm at home!
