It's Finally Time To Confess My Unpopular Christmas Opinions

We all have unpopular opinions on different subjects in our lives. It could be ones about food, TV shows, fashion trends etc. The ones I love having a debate on though are the unpopular Christmas opinions, I find the unpopular Christmas opinions always end up being the most controversial! I posted a question sticker on my Instagram Stories recently to ask for people's unpopular Christmas opinions and it was surprising how many people share the same unpopular opinions as I do!

A letterboard with "My Unpopular Christmas Opinions" written on it.

I debated posting this post for a while now, as it's supposed to be a joyous and festive time of year, I didn't want to put people on a downer. Well, they're just opinions I suppose, I surely can't put people in an unfestive mood by sharing these unpopular opinions? It'll be interesting to see if any of you lovely readers agree with me on some of these!

So, without further ado, it's time to confess my unpopular Christmas opinions:

1) Mulled wine is rank

To me, it's like drinking cough medicine. You'd think I'd be used to that in my life, but sadly, no. Give me a festive-themed cocktail or even a hot chocolate any day!

2) The film Elf is overrated

It's a good film, don't get me wrong, but it's not my most favourite film. I love Home Alone (both), Muppet Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, Santa Claus, Love Actually, The Holiday etc. But Elf is just not a massive hit with me!

3) The turkey - I can take it or leave it

I eat Turkey at Christmas as it's traditional, however, it's not the tastiest meat in the world, is it? It tastes so dry and bland, even gravy can't save it.

4) Die Hard is NOT a Christmas film

I refuse to acknowledge that Die Hard is nothing but an action film. I would never associate Bruce Willis with Christmas, just saying.

5) I hate elf on the shelf

Whoever came up with this needs to go on Santa's naughty list forever. It was funny at first, no I see people copying each other's ideas and it's so repetitive every year and it's just plain annoying!

6) I never dream of a white Christmas

I'm sorry guys, I hate snow. So I never dream of a white Christmas!

7) Christmas Eve is way better than Christmas Day

The excitement on Christmas Eve feels so refreshing and, well, exciting on Christmas Eve! Christmas Day, by the evening, falls a little flat and I end up looking forward to Boxing Day because of the football!

8) When people say that Christmas is for kids

Now you can politely f*ck off if you think that!

9) Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody is the worst Christmas song ever!

It really is. It's a horrible song, anytime Alexa plays that on their Christmas playlist, I automatically tell Alexa to skip it!

10) Christmas pudding is awful

Yep, I prefer a Yule Log or a slice of cheesecake. Christmas pudding is rank, even if brandy is poured over it!

11) Inflatable Santas are so tacky!

You know what I mean, those inflatable Santas that people stick up outside their house on their porch roof or in their front garden, they're horrible. I'm always hoping that it busts or birds poo on them. Nothing against Santa in the slightest, it's just the inflatable ones I don't like!

12) People who have too many different coloured lights outside their home

I love Christmas lights, especially when someone has a theme. However, when people have all the colours of the Christmas rainbow eg blue, cold white, warm white, red, green, gold, silver outside their home, it really annoys me, stick to just 1-2 colours guys, please!

13) Those Christmas films on the Christmas movie channels are incredibly sickly

Like I said, I love the classic Christmas films (as I wrote above) that we see on TV every year. But you know the ones on the movie channels with the actors we don't know and the ones which ALWAYS have a happy ending? Yep, I find them really sickly and not my cup of tea!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on my unpopular Christmas opinions!

  1. I am so with you on so many of these! Even before I went vegan I hated turkey (my mum used to do a chicken!) The veggies and stuffing are the best bit by far! And gravy OH I LOVE GRAVY! And yes, Die Hard is not a Christmas film haha!

  9. I disagree with the elf on the shelf one, I don't think you can really have an opinion on it unless you have little ones as it's simple, it's for them. My little boys face absolutely lights up on a morning believing that they've moved and played with his toys overnight and that's what it's about. Agree with the mulled wine though, gross!

  12. LOVE the concept of this post! I think I might do this for blogmas next year if you don't mind. Oh my gosh yes, Elf is so so so overrated. There are so many other Christmas films like you mentioned that are better classics imo. I also think elf on the shelf is the creepiest thing ever & will never do it for my kids in the future.

  14. Ah you see - my husband used to make Mulled Wine but with grape juice - all the yumminess of mulled wine without the rank overdone wine taste to it. Here in Copenhagen we've had Glogg which is pretty much Danish Mulled Wine but I have been enjoying it more than usual Mulled Wine. I'll have to see what the differences are.

Elf - I don't mind it but Will Ferrell gets on my wick - I'm not sure why thought because I like the Eurovision film lol. It's not my favourite though. I watch It's a Wonderful Life and at least one version of A Christmas Carol most years (usually the Muppets). I’ve been listening to the audiobook of A Christmas Carol and Dickens spends ages describing each scene so I’m still only up to the 2nd ghost - I think sometimes it’s a little muddly when I’m trying to do other things lol.

Die Hard - now to me it’s not a Christmas film but it’s one of my brother’s favourites so if we’ve got to watch it then I save it for when he’s around - or for when he starts sending silly memes around the 23rd December telling me it’s not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Tower….

We have an Elf - he’s currently in the UK so as you can tell we’re *so* dedicated to it. I’d never intended to have one, then my Mum made me one when I was pregnant with Jaxon (he’s now 7). He has got up to some mischief but usually only 1 or 2 days and then he’s not bothered and neither am I. He was a little more bothered when his class at school had an elf but even then it was a school thing and not a home thing. Phew!

Nope, we can’t be friends any more Slade is a great Christmas song. I used to sing in a band with my cousin, mum and uncle. At Christmas when we’d do some Carols and then a few “silly” ones. My cousin and I would sing the bit about “Does your Granny always tell you, that the old songs are the best and she’s up and rock and rolling with the rest” and point at her if she was in the room lol. My worst one is Band Aid - it’s catchy, I’ll sing along but if you actually sit and listen to the lyrics it’s all very white saviour.

And those “hallmark” Christmas tacky movies are my jam lol. I know what’s going to happen and they are super predictable but when you’re wrapping presents or trying to finish that one handmade present that you left too late it’s definitely helpful to have something you don’t need to concentrate on!

    (Essay of a comment! Sorry!)

I used to get sick of seeing in social media but now I'm a parent, I understand it a bit more now and appreciate the efforts people go to to allow their child to believe in magic!
