Bras That Every Woman Need

*There are PR samples in this post. See the end of the post for more details.

My Mam always taught me that as long as you got a black and white bra in your underwear draw, you're good to go.

She was right. You always need a black or white bra on different occasions. Nowadays, there are all types of bras that come in a range of different materials, patterns and styles, it can be hard to choose which bra is what you need.

Before choosing the bra you want, get yourself measured (obvs a little tricky to do so right now). But you can measure yourself at home if you follow the fitting guides on lingerie websites. It can be a little tricky to measure at home though. I tried it once before I felt confident enough to let somebody else do it for me and I swear I made the discovery that I was double jointed during the measuring process. I think I might have misread the instructions.

Being measured not only means you can find out what your real bra size is, but you can also find out what type of bra would suit your bust the most.

Like I said, there is so much variety of bras out in the high street and online. I'm somebody who does like being new bra sets. I feel like I can conquer the world when I am wearing a matching bra and knickers. If that don't show you that you've got your shit together, I don't know what will.

Thinking about the bras I have in my underwear draw upstairs (it's the top draw, for those wondering) I have bras that are not only pretty, but are essential too.

I've come up with a little list of the sorts of bras you need in your lingerie draw -

1) BLACK  BRA
__________
Of course you need a black bra. I remember my Mam telling me that her black bra was her best bra and only worn on nights out. Or as we say nowadays, going 'out out'. Black bras are great for wearing under darker colours. Don't make the monumental mistake of wearing one under a white top. Unless it's a black bralette under a white shirt. Then that's kind of different. That're more of a fashionable outfit.

2) WHITE  BRA
__________
Yep, you need a white bra. Great for wearing under white tops. Well, duh. The only issue with white bras is that they discolour quite quickly, unless you're one of those people who separates their whites from their darks. Then you REALLY have your shit together. But yes, a white bra is always a good investment.

3) A  T-SHIRT  BRA
_________
A t-shirt bra is a seamless and smooth cup bra. They are perfect to wear when you have a figure hugging top/dress on. They don't reveal or imprint the pattern of your bra from the inside of your top. Also it gives great support and is great for everyday wear. They're also definitely the most comfortable type of bra you will ever own. Period.

4) A  STRAPLESS  BRA
_________
You buy a new top, dress, jumpsuit or playsuit and then you make the discovery that you can't wear a normal, strappy bra with it. Bugger. Do what I do, have a strapless bra in your draw. They will always come in handy one day. One tip I will give you when buying a strapless bra - buy a band size down to what you normally are. As strapless bras don't offer so much support because of the absence of straps, if you have a band that's a bit tighter, you won't feel the need to hoick up the bra every two minutes. Also buy a strapless bra that comes with straps that are removable, it can then double up as a normal bra for everyday wear. Two birds and all that.

5) A  SPORTS  BRA
_________
If you're gym goer or runner, don't wear a normal bra when jogging out and about. It will make your bra stink and it's just not comfortable to wear when you're running. When you buy a sports bra, choose one based on your activity. A low impact bra is suitable for yoga, Pilates or walking. A medium impact bra is good for a fast walk or a low impact cardio session. Finally, a high impact bra is good for the more rigorous workouts eg running, Zumba or aerobics.

6) A  PUSH  UP  BRA
_________
I always thought that push up bras were only meant for women with smaller busts. As I recently found out, that is SO untrue. A push up bra can help make your chest look fuller and also help with women who's breasts do not stick up high on the chest. So yes, if you have a bigger breast size (like myself) then consider a push up bra.

7) A  RED  BRA
________
I don't know why, but I don't feel my underwear draw is complete without having a red bra in there. I just feel a lot more confident when I'm wearing a red bra. This maybe just me.

Where do you buy your bras from? Let me know if you agree with me on the types of bras every woman needs!

  1. I love that black bra! I’ve been on a full on bra finding mission for the last couple of years. I used to buy all of my bras from Victoria’s Secret around 3 or 4 years ago but I noticed that their designs were suddenly becoming really branded and childish, plus they hiked up their prices and the fit seemed to change as well. I tried bras on in pretty much every shop on the high street with no success - they all fit me so badly! Around a year ago I decided to try Bravissmo.
Their styles are lovely, they’re super reasonably priced and the main thing…the bras actually fit! I’ve been looking into Figleaves recently too as they have so many lovely styles x

    1. That black bra is so comfortable Faye, it's one of my favourites! Victoria's Secret bras are incredibly expensive aren't they, plus they don't cater for my size! I'm glad you found a style and brand that suits you now lovely xx

  5. I especially love the black and white bras! I get mine usually from Boux Avenue or Ann Summers, but I'm a bit of a cheapskate as I'll only buy them when they're in the sale 😂 I've never actually been properly fitted for a bra so I think once things go back to a bit more normality I'll have to get it done and invest in some decent ones!

  6. I haven't been measured in forever and probably should when the world goes back to normal again. All of my favourite bras are black. I wear the same few on repeat then complain that I'm never going to find one that fits that well when they stretch or need replacing 😂. I hate how white underwear looks against my skin tone so I own one begrudgingly and only wear it when 100% necessary. x

  10. Bralettes are so pretty and can be worn in so many ways. I do love a good strapless bra too. They can work with so many different outfits and garments.

  14. I have a love hate relationship with bras, I have quite big boobs and a small back so I find it hard to find pretty bras that are still functional and keeping everything in place. I definitely have a white bra (kind of looks grey now!), a black bra and a strapless bra but I need to get more pretty bras! X

  16. Those bras are lovely. I have so many bras in my draw, but I never wear them all. I think it is great to have a range of bras, and I actually tend to go for more nude/tan bras than white under white clothing. I also have a bra that I only wear for work and others for best haha!

    Thanks for sharing!
