Discovering new clothing brands is one of my favourite things to do. As much as I love high street stores, it's nice to find other clothing brands and learn about their ethos and clothing style. It's even better when you discover a brand that matches your current style. This is exactly what happened with Ruti.

Who is Ruti?

Ruti is a clothing brand founded in 2009 by Ruti Zisser. After years as a tech executive, Ruti took a leap of faith, struck out on her own, and decided to create a new kind of luxury brand.

Ruti has three rules when it comes to design:

  • It must be cool - you don't need to sacrifice the cool factor to achieve a classic and sophisticated look.
  • It must be flattering - Ruti's clothes are designed to flatter women without making them look like they're trying too hard.
  • It must be practical - 80% of Ruti's collection is clothes that she wears daily. 20% of Ruti's clothing is aspirational, the woman she daydreams of being.

The brand also has 5 core values:

  • Unconventional
  • All about community
  • Comfortable and nonchalant
  • Timeless styles
  • Slow fashion

What items did you receive from Ruti?

I received the Relaxed Light Denim Tunic and the Crop Mid-Rise Straight Jeans.

Tell us about the Ruti Relaxed Light Denim Tunic!

This *denim tunic (linked similar to the one I'm wearing has sold out) is a great addition to my Autumn wardrobe! Another great aspect of this tunic is that with a waistbelt, it can be worn as a cute Summer-style dress. I am definitely pairing this tunic with a pair of black leggings (cotton or athleisure wear), a white tee/vest/sports bra, and a pair of my favourite trainers. This tunic has poppers on the cuff as well as on the front to do up.

If you're petite, I recommend sizing down to avoid the item drowning you out.

Now tell us about the Ruti Crop Mid-Rise Straight Jeans!

We all know the struggle of buying jeans that fit us perfectly. We've all been there where we're different sizes in different stores, and the pain of sending jeans back because they don't fit well. I did take a risk picking jeans from Ruti. A brand I was unaware of until recently, and having jeans from them was a HUGE risk in case they didn't fit. However, I'm pleased to say...THEY FIT PERFECTLY!

*These jeans are incredibly flattering - BUT - I forgot to size down as recommended on Ruti's website...oops! However, these still fit really well and are super comfortable. It's slightly loose on the waistband, but that's my fault. If I had sized down as recommended by Ruti, these would have fitted perfectly. Having said that, these fit really well and are quite flattering despite being the wrong size.

One design detail I like about these jeans is that, rather than a zip to pull up, it's rivets instead. It makes the jeans even more comfortable to wear, and there's no worry of a zip showing when sitting down.

So, how would you rate the brand?

Quality

The item's quality is pretty good! The denim is of amazing quality; it's durable and versatile. The jeans are incredibly comfortable, and I can happily wear them while relaxing at home. The tunic is of great quality, also I love that the poppers for buttons! These pieces will last me for a long time!

Sustainablity

This is one slight snag with this brand - there's no evidence of their sustainability credentials anywhere on their website. This is such a shame, so I am going to assume they don't practice sustainability. If they do, then they haven't declared so. If that's the case, their website needs updating to show that.

Price

With this brand, you do get what you pay for in terms of quality. As I've said, the quality is second to none. The prices reflect that. Yes, it's expensive guys, I'm not going to lie. Prices range from £74 to £310.

Style/Versatility

There are pieces that I could easily incorporate into my wardrobe. Other pieces I most certainly wouldn't. Again, that's due to my personal taste. One thing I can say is that some of the brand's pieces are very versatile and can slot into a minimalistic or capsule wardrobe.

Fit

For my body shape, Ruti's items fit me quite well. I should have sized down on the jeans if I had read the caption properly (as stated above). There's no struggle putting the jeans on, they're not too tight on my waist or thighs and are comfortable to wear.

The tunic fits really well; the length is slightly too long for my height. However, if I sized down, it would have felt snug on the arms. So I think I was better off getting this size for that optimum comfort and style.

Shipping/Returns

If you live in the US, they offer free shipping on purchases over $100. However, for international shipping, costs are determined by destination, size/weight of package and the chosen shipping method. So if you ordered from the UK, for example, you could be paying at least £10 for shipping. Expensive - yes. But I've seen other international brands charge a lot more.

In regards to returns, if you order from the UK, you will be liable to pay at least £10 to return your item/items (this does depend on the country of origin), and the return fee will be deducted from your refund. Hmm. Make of that what you will.

Would you recommend Ruti?

If you like premium and luxury minimalist clothing, then this brand is for you! I adore the quality of the items, and you would certainly get your money's worth! However, the pricing and lack of sustainability credentials are disadvantages for me.

Their returns policy has me questioning things, too. But I know every brand likes to do things differently.

I like Ruti's items, but I don't know if I would buy from the brand myself. It's just too expensive for my bank account!

I'd love to know your thoughts on my review!

The dream of buying my own home is very distant, almost impossible right now. I'm in my 30s and still live at home, I've just registered as self-employed, I'm single, and while my friends are talking about their children's milestones, I'm talking about a new stray cat that has come into my garden begging me for food (FYI, I do feed him). Mortgages would be my milestone, and I'm far from considering speaking to a mortgage advisor.

There's this huge assumption that you only need to think about talking to mortgage advisors when you get an offer accepted on your house. But that's not entirely true - it's actually better to speak to a mortgage advisor way before you're considering buying. It's actually a wise move to get in touch with an advisor to gain a better understanding of potential mortgage deals

Here are some reasons why it's a good idea to speak to a mortgage advisor early:

1) You'll get vital information

A mortgage advisor will look through your records, finances and savings to see what the best mortgage option would be for you. It'll be a good chance for you to get a plan in action when it comes to knowing how much to save for a deposit.

You may get good news and may be told that a 5% deposit may be enough to put a deposit down. If you've already saved nearly 10%, you may have a wider range of options. This may inspire you to knuckle down and save a little harder than before so you can be in the best position to get a mortgage.

A mortgage advisor will give you a clearer what you're aiming for with your deposit.

2) You'll save yourself an awful lot of time

Speaking to a mortgage advisor from the outset will give you a realistic idea of how much you can borrow. This, in turn, can give you a better understanding of what your property budget will look like. You can then start looking at properties which are realistically within your budget range, rather than looking at properties you can't afford.

3) It prepares you for other costs

If it were only just buying a house. No other expenses or costs. That would be an ideal and simpler world! A mortgage advisor will give you a good idea of other costs, including stamp duty and solicitors' fees. It's not about making sure you have an air fryer and garden furniture before moving in!

Knowing the other costs will allow you to put that little extra bit of money away every month so you're fully prepared for it when it comes to paying for those costs.

4) You'll get advice to be 'mortgage-ready'

Ideally, you want to be in the strongest position possible and be 'mortgage-ready' roughly around six months before applying. A mortgage advisor will obviously advise you on how to be ready for your mortgage application.

How can I make myself ready to apply for a mortgage?

There are three things you can do to ensure this, they include:

1) Check your credit score and reports.

There are free websites that will give you your credit score and report. Check through each report carefully to make sure there are no inaccuracies. If something does flag up, get it corrected as soon as possible.

2) Save up regularly

To a mortgage lender, it will show them that you can manage money well, and the money saved can go towards your deposit.

3) Try and pay off any outstanding loans

It will be a good idea to pay off any outstanding loans before applying for a mortgage. Your mortgage advisor will give you tailored advice on how to do this. Another tip - avoid taking out any more loans in the meantime.

When I go and see a mortgage advisor, what do I need to bring with me?

Be prepared and buy yourself a big bag. You're going to need to take a lot of documents with you:

  • Proof of identity (passport or driving licence)
  • Proof of address (utility bill or bank statements from the last 3 months)
  • Proof of income (recent payslips, P60 if employed, recent bank statements, recent Self-Assessment Tax returns if self-employed)
  • Details of any existing debts (if there are any)
  • Proof of deposit
  • Credit report
  • Details of existing mortgages or life insurance policies
  • Your solicitor's details
  • Monthly spending

It sounds a lot more than it is, but a mortgage advisor will talk everything through with you and tell you what they need from you.

These are reasons why it's a good idea to see a mortgage advisor before you're ready to buy!

If you have any tips yourself, please share them in the comments. I'm sure it would be helpful for others who want to step onto the property ladder!
