Are You Making These Critical Fashion Mistakes?

Do you want to start looking and feeling better about yourself? If so, then you have come to the right place. This guide will show you what steps you can take to improve your outfits without making any mistakes.

Are you making these critical fashion mistakes?

Desperation Shopping

If you have a wedding to go to, or a special birthday looming then you need to make sure you plan. Don’t go to a shop you can’t count on and don’t assume you have something in your wardrobe that will do. The last thing you want is to have a last-minute shopping spree that overwhelms and stresses you out. If this happens then you will probably end up coming home with something that you are never going to wear again, which is the last thing you need. If you want to do something about this then as soon as you get an invite, schedule time in your calendar so you can figure out what it is you want to wear.

When you assess your clothes, remember that adding thrifted, borrowed or rented accessories can be a great problem-solver. If you are certain that you don’t have anything right then look on used websites. This is a great way to get what you are looking for, without pressure.

Markdown Prices

Sales and even special offers make it easy to lose your mind. Common sense and budgeting will help you out a lot here. Make sure that before you buy something impulsively, you reflect and pause. Is it the thrill of a bargain that you are actively responding to? If it was full price, would you still want the item?

Imagine what you would like to wear the item with and then take note of the occasions it is suited for. Ask yourself what items in your closet can also serve the same purpose. If you can do this then you will soon find that it becomes easier to come to the right decision.

Phobia of Cobblers

Preventative maintenance can go a long way here. Spare yourself and your wallet stress by taking your shoes to the cobblers from time to time. Buy some water-repellent spray and give your shoes a good spray before you wear them out. You should do this every week. You should also see this as being like a moisturizer for your shoes.

If you notice that you have spots on your suede shoes then you can remove these with a special eraser. If you have leather-soled boots then give them to your cobbler and they will add a thin layer of rubber to protect it. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier for you to get the result you want out of your fashionable clothing and that it looks better for longer. If you don’t have any boots then buying online is the way to go. You can buy size 4 boots from numerous retailers if you have smaller feet, and when you do, you can feel confident knowing that you will always have something that makes you feel good.

Closet Piling

Piling a ton of tops onto one hanger and over-stuffing your drawers can be a huge mistake. You may also find this to be very overwhelming. The solution here would be for you to carve out an off-season storage area. You don’t have to be perfect here, but you do need to make sure that you have some standards that you hold yourself to. If you can, you also need to make sure that you are using the right hanger for the task. Sturdier hangers are good as they help you to maintain the shape of your coats and your blazers. If you have a heavy-knit sweater then this will stretch if you hang it. Protect your trousers by hanging them from the bottom, as this is the best way for you to stop those tell-tale creases.

Purse Consideration

Another thing you need to do is swap and use the purses you have. Carrying your everyday bag to a wedding or slinging a weekend tote is not what you should be doing. You need to give some thought to the bags and purses that you have and you also need to swap what you have, depending on the occasion. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier for you to get the result you are going for, while boosting your fashion game in more ways than one.

Let me know your thoughts! Are you guilty of doing any of these?

  1. Great advice, Lucy! It can be easy to take advantage of a good sale, but asking yourself if you'd buy the item at full price helps a lot. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I know, it's so easy to take advantage of a sale, but I tend not to shop sales anymore as it's not worth it!

  2. These are good tips, thank you for sharing! I find if something is on sale or not, I have to know 2 ways I'll wear it in the month I buy it. That's really stopped me having pieces in my wardrobe I don't wear, and made sure no matter how much of a bargain something is, that it's something I will get use from :)

  3. I pretty much have a wardrobe of mismatched stuff because I tend to just buy things on sale and/or without a clear look/vibe in mind. I must sort this out! January will be the month I finally get to grips with this!

  4. Good point in your last tip. I’ve made sure to keep a purse for every occasion so I never have to reuse too much for every single event.

  5. I try to only buy things on sale that I already wanted, so that I am actually saving money rather than spending it! I used to have a bit of an impulse buy habit at charity shops, so now I only look if there is something I need. Love these tips Lucy x

  6. I usually buy on sale items but my problem is matching them. I already told myself since last year I need to get a professional-looking closet but I can only afford sale items by the way.

  8. These are some great tips. Looking after your shoes is such an underrated thing. I've made mine last so much longer by using a cobbler, even if it's to get things re-heeled.

  11. I'm pretty good about things here, although stuffing my drawers (and floor of my wardrobe) is a problem, so I'm currently decluttering.

  12. I agree with desperation shopping and marked down prices. I used to live for sales, thinking that I was saving money in the long run, but it ultimately led to pieces that didn't fit my style and wardrobe, or wasted money when I donated unworn items. I've been a victim of desperation shopping as you mentioned, and that led to settling for something I wasn't a big fan of so I couldn't rewear it after the event!

    1. That's the problem with buying stuff in the sales, the majority of it never gets worn and you end up donating it or selling it!

  14. I've bought so many things just because they were in the sale before and hardly worn them! I don't even look in the sales anymore. It's just stuff people didn't want!
