Trying To Embrace The Home Life

A lot of us are staring at four walls wondering when we are going to be able to step outside freely again. We're all either living with our parents, partners, spouses or flatmates and wondering how the hell we haven't gone ape shit at them over the way they suck a Cornetto.

Yes, being at home, it can suck sometimes. Not having that physical contact with your loved ones is tough and it's something I, as we all are, struggling with right now. As much as I am craving going outside and (let me just daydream about the outdoors life for a sec) and being fed up of staring at the same four walls so much that I can memorise the pattern in the wallpaper, I am going to try and embrace the new staying at home lifestyle we've had to conform to.

Embracing This New Home Life

Don't get me wrong, I miss going outside TERRIBLY. I miss my old lifestyle. I look outside my window like they do in the odd scene from Friends and I wonder what it's like to go out out. Even just out.

But there's nothing we can do, we're stuck in for our own good. We're doing the right thing by staying in. It's the only way we can get life back to normal quicker.

As much as we want to get out right now, I'm going to be embracing this new lifestyle that we now have and it may be the key into getting through this lockdown.

Embracing This New Home Life

We all said at the beginning of lockdown/self isolation that we all we're going to do those odd jobs that needed doing, clean out the cupboard under the stairs or having a massive clothes sort out. Ok, I've done most of this sort of thing already. You could also sort out your garden, pulling up the weeds is my speciality plus it's all I can do in terms of gardening. I'm no female Alan Titchmarsh. It's kinda nice to say that my house is a better place to live in. Not only is it cleaner, it doesn't feel like a dumping ground as much now. It feels more homely, it's quite heartwarming in a sense. I would like to keep my house this way post lockdown - hopefully.

It's quite nice to spend time at home when it's looking more pleasant and cleaner than it's ever been. This got me thinking, before the pandemic, how much time did we REALLY spend in our homes? Think about it, we get up in the morning around 6:30/7am, go to work at about 7:30/8am to avoid the traffic. You arrive at work for 8/9 hours. Then it's time to leave work about 4:30/5pm, try and fight through rush hour traffic (especially on a Friday) then possibly go to the gym or food shopping after work, then return home for the evening about 6:30/7pm. So roughly, prior to lockdown, the majority of us would spend about 11 hours at home - and roughly 4/5 hours you're AWAKE. Disclaimer - everybody's working/daily life is different.

It's quite crazy when you think of it like that. Think, we spend god knows how much on rent/mortgages every month for our homes, I'm just going to embrace this new home life for now! As much as I'll be elated for the day I can go outside and breathe in some fresh air, I'm just going to stop complaining about it so much for now and just be grateful that I have a decent home to live in.

Embracing This New Home Life

That's why I'm going to try and be more enthusiastic and positive about being at home. It isn't ideal I know, but it'll mean the whole situation we're currently in will be gone sooner rather than later.

However, I am keeping those in mind who are wishing to not be at home 24/7 right now. Those in domestic violence relationships and can't escape, the elderly who live on their own and can't have any visitors to cheer them up or are in care homes not being able to be visited by family. Those who are living on their own and/or have mental health issues. A simple call or Facetime won't hurt. It's what they need. A few spare minutes to speak to someone can brighten a person's day.

Also I want to give a shoutout to NHS workers and all key workers who want to be able to go home and relax but are instead thinking about going to work the next day feeling scared and wondering what they will be facing. My thoughts go out to you all. You're an inspiration to us all and are truly thankful for all your care and hard work.

How are you finding life at home right now? I hope you're all doing ok! If you feel lonely and need someone to talk to, DM me on one of my socials!

  2. I was just talking yesterday about how little time we actually spent in the house! It seems crazy now that we are in it all the time that there was ever a time where we were just passing through so to speak.

We have used this time to make our house a home, it has been a long time coming and I think it would have taken us a few years to achieve what we have in the last 10 weeks.

Now I have a home I don't want to leave even when they tell us we can x

    1. That's how I think of it too lovely, I just used to use my home as a base for eating and sleeping, now I'm in it more, I love it! It's so nice to hear that the changes you have made to your home have made you so happy! x

  3. I'm now at the point where I'm so used to being at home that it's become my new normal and I've decided to embrace it. I have a whole new routine and while I would love to go back to normal I must admit I'm enjoying having some extra free time thanks to the fact I no longer have a commute!

  4. We've started to actually use this time to make our home a little bit more homely, buy those home decor bits. We got ourselves a new big plant for the living room, some prints and also a new shelf ladder, making your home more cosy is definitely helping xx

  5. Things have certainly a lot different in the last few weeks, I have not been so happy some days to be at home, I want to get out to visit family and going shopping. It goes in waves for me.

I do hope once this is all over I can be more independent of everyone!

    1. It has been incredibly difficult, as I'm in the vulnerable category with the virus, I'll be stuck at home longer so I'm just trying to make the most of it! I'm looking forward to going back to the independent lifestyle too

  6. You are so right about this, Lucy. Hundred percent agree with ya!! While I miss the outside life and this whole pandemic is a mess, I'm loving this lockdown life to be honest. It is a blessing in disguise. The earth needed a break from us as well.

  8. Although I worked from home before lockdown so not TOO MUCH changed for me, I'm still missing going out for the day, going on holiday, meeting friends etc. But I'm so used to the a home routine now. My mental health and anxiety has been really good spending all this time at home though!

  11. This is actually really weird for me because I work from home and have insomnia. So if it's a regular weekday and I'm not going out for dinner or whatever, and I'm not at the gym that night. I probably would spend 22 hours a day at home, and about 18 of those hours awake. The odd part for me is getting used to not being home alone and getting used to the extra noise of having others working from home too. Not having the option of going out does linger in my mind, and more frequently the longer it goes on. I would love to return to normality but I'm very comfortable in my 4 walls x
