Keeping It Au Naturale

Let me ask you something? When was the last time you posted a photo on your Instagram where you were fresh faced, makeup free, your hair was in disarray and you were wearing your scruffs? I don't think many people could answer that question. Or maybe it's a rhetorical one - it doesn't require an answer.

I'm somebody who likes to look my best. As much as applying makeup is time consuming, I love the confidence I feel when I wear makeup. Makeup is made to enhance our beauty, perfect any flaws we feel we may have. I always like to keep my hair in good condition, I wash it every three days and I style it with the straighteners or wave wand to make me look like a standard human being.

However, recently with this new job, as I am running around like a blue bottle fly with the runs, I'm sweating salty buckets (a CF term) all of the time so there's absolutely no point in plastering my face with my NARS foundation. It just drips off me, I'm not wasting my best foundation for work! Also due to me having to cook and with it feeling like an oven heated sauna, there's no point in me having my hair straight, it needs to be tied up in a bobble. By the end of my shift, I end up leaving like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards, then back again.

I think it's important to embrace our faces makeup free. We are so hung up these days on the latest Naked palette or the most on trend lip colour of the season, we forget that what makes us beautiful is not the makeup - it's who we are as a person.

Life is kind of like an Insta vs Reality . When you go out, you want to show off your beauty, you wear your nicest clothes, you apply your makeup to perfection and you style your hair to within an inch of it's life. But how often is it that we go out and say that we feel comfortable with going out makeup free? Hmm.

I can thankfully say that I go out with no makeup on quite a lot now. If I'm just going to Tesco Express or Home Bargains, I don't bother applying any makeup. There's absolutely no point in painting my face when I'm only going out to buy a bottle of rose or a six pack of prawn cocktail crisps. Not wearing makeup so often means I can learn to love my flaws, feel more confident and allow my skin to breathe. Makeup does have chemicals in it, it's important to stay away from them every now and then. A few years ago, I wouldn't have even stepped foot outside with doing my brows. It definitely shows how far I've come. I only wear makeup nowadays when I'm going anywhere nice or 'out out'. One thing I can say is that wearing less makeup has saved me a lot of money!

When it comes to my hair, I do like to keep my hair nice. It's the one thing I like to do as even with no makeup, I feel better knowing my hair is straight or nicely waved. One thing I have started doing to help my hair is not drying it with the hairdryer. I let it dry naturally now, it's saves my hair from a lot of damage! Or if I do need to dry it, I flick the cool button switch on my hairdryer, it takes longer but doesn't over heat my hair. But there are days where I can't be arsed to stand in the mirror and do anything with my car. Sometimes I sit around the house with it looking like I've been electrocuted.

This is my point. Please ladies, embrace your face makeup free, you're beautiful without it all. You don't need to paint your face like Miss Piggy all of the time. You don't need to have the sleekest hairstyle all the time. Keep it Au Naturale.

  1. You are so pretty! I hardly ever wear make up or do much with my hair.

When I lost a lot of weight some years ago, I wore make up and took a lot of care about how I looked. Now I am not looking how I'd like to, its like I have given up.

The plus side of this is my hair is in great condition from not blow drying and straightening and my skin is so clear from the lack of make up.

It is so important we embrace ourselves how ever that might be on any given day x

  2. I love wearing make up, but sometimes I really like to keep things natural, as it is so important to give your skin a break! You are absolutely gorgeous my lovely!

  3. I don't wear much in the way of make-up nor do I do much other than a ponytail, straight and long or messy bun my hair. I used to wear lots of make-up and made an effort with my hair everyday, guess I've learnt to embrace the au natural look, oh and I've had 6 children so I don't have me time 😂

  5. You look absolutely gorgeous! You can totally pull of going makeup-free! I have pretty clear skin, but I have redness on my nose and dark undereye circles. I wear a full face at work if I have the time to apply it, but sometimes I wear just brows, mascara and a cream blush. I don't wear makeup at all when running errands and sometimes I just have my glasses on!

    1. Aww thank you very much Hannah! I get red nose and cheeks and also dark under eyes! I think just wearing the makeup basics to work is enough!

  6. I love wearing make up, but you can't beat going make up free can you? If I have no plans, I tend to be make-up free and leave my hair to dry naturally rather than hairdryer it. But, I do wear make up most days, just not a full on face unless I am going out-out.

    You look fab au naturale!

  7. This was really interesting. I had a moment, maybe a year ago, when I realised that although I do wear makeup often, I don't notice if I'm not wearing it these days. When I was at uni, there was a Tesco Express on the ground floor of my building and I would be in all day with my naked face then put on a little makeup at 10pm just to pop downstairs for Pringles?! I couldn't imagine doing that now. It's so important to be comfortable with your natural self x

    1. Absolutely Sophie, you need to be comfortable with being your natural self and not feel you have to wear a little makeup just to go to the corner shop! x

  8. You look so pretty! I'm still learning to get by without make up and failing miserably 😂 I've worn glasses since I was a little kid and it's left me with quite bad dark patches under my eyes so I'm always super conscious of them. I honestly can't remember the last time I took a picture of my face without makeup! But I love your message in this post, I'm going to try and take a leaf from it and learn to except my face without the slap once in a while! Xx
