How To Be A More Of A Morning Person

I'll be honest, I'm not an overly enthusiastic morning person. Even when I know I have to wake up early, it doesn't fill me with much excitement going to bed that night knowing there is an alarm set for a few hours time. Also there's fighting the temptation to not hit the snooze button as soon as the alarm rings it's high pitched tone. Plus the bed is so warm and cosy first thing in the morning that I just can't find the heart to leave it. 



Let's just all agree that sleep is the best thing ever, right? Ok, food may possibly also be the best thing ever. But yes, sleep is the ONE. Sometimes I look forward to going to bed at night after I get up in the morning. Maybe that isn't the best attitude to have. It's like I'm wishing the day away. However, I want to change that. I've been sleeping so much away due to current pandemic circumstances that I've forgotten what it's like to be an early bird that catches the worm.



When I was working, I used to be a morning person. Only because I had to be. But I miss having productive mornings then relaxing in the afternoon by doing the things that I love eg blogging or reading. I plan to change that now for the rest of the time I'm in my shielding sentence. 



If you're like me and suck at being a morning person, here's some of the things that you can try that may help you wake up with the sunrise -



1) GET  ENOUGH  SLEEP

Ok, could this BE a more obvious suggestion?! Yep, doing my Chandler Bing there. But yes, go to bed earlier, you'll get more sleep. The recommended amount of sleep adults should be getting is 7-9 hours. I pretty much get more than enough of that right now. But if you're working and know you have to be up early, go to bed earlier, surely it's common sense?!



2) DON'T  HIT  THE  SNOOZE  BUTTON

Yes, we're all guilty of doing this. You think you can have a couple of extra minutes in your warm, cosy bed. A couple of minutes turns into 45 minutes and there's that sheer panic when you realise you've only got 10 minutes to eat breakfast, put makeup on and the realisation that you haven't got time to nip to Starbucks on the way to work for that Frappuccino. So yes, when your alarm rings with that piercing sound, just get out of bed, don't fall for the temptation of your bed. 



3) EAT  BREAKFAST

Oh baby, this is my favourite part of my morning. Followed by my puffing my inhaler to relieve my lungs and it's troubled airways. I usually opt for something quick for breakfast. I like to just have a bowel of Shreddies or a slice or three of toast. Having breakfast will give you that boost in energy that you need to get through that boring work meeting with your boss Sandra. Breakfast is just boss. Trust me.



4) HAVE  A  ROUTINE  IN  PLACE

Going to bed late means missing precious hours the next morning when you could have gotten so much done. If you set your alarm for a certain time, make sure (if you can) get up to it, go downstairs and start your day how you would like. It could be quite fun to create a morning routine that you know would suit you and your needs. Imagine being able to get so much done in the morning that you can have a free afternoon of just chilling? One thing that you can add to your routine is this... 



5)  GO  TO  THE  GYM

This may be easier said than done. I did use to go the gym reasonably early before chaos ensued with the pandemic. A workout can certainly wake me up and set me up for the day. One advantage of going to the gym early is that it's pretty quiet. Much quieter than in the evenings between 5-7pm. Those post gym endorphins you feel afterwards are worth it. I promise you. Obviously not many of us can or don't go to the gym, so an early exercise sesh at home works just as good. Maybe it could be a morning yoga session or a light cardio workout to get your blood pumping and a little sweat on before tucking in to your Weetabix.

  2. I've realised that having something to look forward to in the morning helped me establish some semblance of becoming a morning person. For me that was journaling and sitting with a steaming hot cup of water in the balcony.

  4. I have always been a morning person...once I am awake I find it really hard to go back to sleep. My room always gets the morning sunlight, so I think that really helps (plus I have to get up early for work mon-fri). I must admit, on a weekend I will stay in bed longer, but usually on my phone rather than sleeping lol.
    Having a routine really does help, doesn't it?

  5. I am a morning person, but only a newbie! I am so much more productive.

    I think the change for me was going to the gym before work. It set me up for the day. Then I could come home from work and just chill without feeling guilty!

    Great advice here, sleep is so important but getting the right balance is really beneficial x

  7. I do think at times I can be a morning person, it definitely depends on what time I went to bed the night before. I like getting things done in the morning so I have the rest of the day to relax! X

  8. I am most certainly not a morning person, and after having to get up at 4:30am for work for 7 years, until March this year. I currently stay in bed as late as possible 😂 I do need to start changing that habit though. Stuff needs getting done.

  9. I'm definitely not a morning person, but the pups have been helpful when it comes to moving past that and making the most of my mornings. Our boy Indy has NO interest in sleeping in and when he's up, he expects us to be as well. A flat-coated retriever has no snooze button... lol

  10. These are some good tips. I've struggled for years to become a morning person. Still struggling lol but maybe I'll try incorporating one or two of these things.

  12. I am the most nighttime person ever. I've had insomnia since I was a little kid and literally can't fall asleep before 3 or 4am so I end up doing a lot of work and being highly functional late at night. I'm not bad at getting up early (by product of being the kind of person who doesn't really need sleep to function) but I much prefer nights. I totally agree about not hitting snooze though! It's so much easier to get up and get going with your day if you just...get up. I'd love to be more of a morning person but I guess we can't all be the same x

  13. I am such a night owl, but want to try and become more of a morning person! I'm hoping to implement some of these things (except maybe swapping the gym for yoga!) so I can get used to slightly earlier mornings in time for when I get back to uni.

  21. Great post! I'm probably more of a morning person just because when it gets to the evening like 8pm I could happily get into bed and sleep! It gets difficult for me though with my job as I do shift work, so this week I have been starting work at 8am but the next week I could be starting at 2.30pm. So the later I work, the more I want to go to bed later and get up later the next day!!

  23. Loving these tips, Lucy! Getting up and getting out has been so helpful to me recently. I take my dog for a walk as soon as I wake up and it really helps to get me started for the day xx

  25. I find it hard to balance between night owl and morning person. I can do both; sometimes I'll get a blog idea and write a post all night, but other times I get up at 6am and re-do the whole house! Thanks for these tips - I'm going back to work next week so need to start getting up & into a routine!
